On September 2007, the European Commission awarded to IE a Jean Monnet Chair, the holder of which will be Professor José M. de Areilza. This Chair is part of the European Commission’s Jean Monnet Program, which honours the memory of the founder of the European Communities and first President of the European Commission. The Jean Monnet Program was launched in 1990 and is present in approximately 700 universities and in more than 60 countries.
The objective of the Jean Monnet Chairs is to stimulate teaching, research and reflection in the field of European integration in undergraduate and postgraduate studies.
IE is the first Spanish business school to obtain a Jean Monnet Chair. The new Chair will organize seminars and conferences as well as debates and discussions about European issues of interest to European citizens and European undertakings. José M. de Areilza holds a LL.B. degree with the Special University Prize from the Complutense University of Madrid, a Master of Laws and a Doctorate in Juridical Sciences from Harvard University and a Master of International Relations from The Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy. He is a member of the Bar of New York and Vice Dean of IE Law School. He started to teach in the LL.M. Programs of the IE in 1996. He has published over 40 articles on European law and integration. He has been a visiting Professor at the College of Europe (Warsaw), William & Mary School of Law (Virginia, USA), National University of Singapore (Singapore), UCP Lisboa (Lisbon) and Central European University (Budapest). Between 1996 and 2000 he was an advisor in European affairs in the Cabinet of the Spanish Prime Minister and in 2002 he was Advisor to the Representative of the Spanish Government in the European Convention on the Future of Europe.
