A position as resident filmmaker at the Sundance Film Institute might seem an odd place to start a career in business academia. But David Allen has found the business world every bit as compelling as the creative arts. “The MBA is a course in how the world works,” he says of the programme he took while teaching film history at City University in New York. “Because really if you think that business organisations dominate the world, then knowing how they work is crucial.”

Prof Allen has plenty of real world experience. As well as his work in the film industry, he was also the founding partner of a boutique banking consulting firm whose included La Caixa, Citibank, Credit Lyonnais and Lloyd’s Bank.

And this experience clearly pays off in his teaching, where he focuses on strategy, business ethics and the entertainment industry. In 2003, his interactive case X-Box: Now It’s Time to Play (co-authored with Arnaud Gorgeon) won the EFMD European Case Writing Award, while in 2001 he was among Business Week’s list of 100 Outstanding Business School Professors.

Prof Allen – whose research focuses on creative entrepreneurship, business ethics and how companies can manage their social dynamics to foster creativity – is convinced he is in the right place. “In the 16th century, I might have been studying theology,” he says. “But today business school is where the action is – this is where things are happening and where we’re trying to work out the way the world is going to develop.”
