Freedom of expression

The freedom of expression for university professors is recognised as a fundamental right in article 20 of the Spanish Constitution.

Similarly, it is included in the Organic Statutes of Universities. In particular, Title VI, Article 33.2 of Act 6/2001 of 21 December (LOU), at development stage, lays down the said right as follows: Teaching is a right and a duty of university professors, who shall carry out their work with freedom of expression with no more limitations than those laid down in the Constitution and in the laws and those resulting from the organisation of the teaching carried out at their universities.

Article 39.2 of the same organic statute recognises and guarantees freedom of research at university. As Instituto de Empresa is a higher teaching institution and as a result of its similitude with universities, it has laid down the principles of freedom of expression for both the teaching and the research work carried out by its professors.

Consequently, all the professors at Instituto de Empresa shall carry out their work under the protection of the constitutional principle of freedom of expression, which shall cover training, research, information and consultancy activities. The application of the principle of freedom of expression in teaching must be applied in conjunction with the commitment to ethical responsibility by the teaching staff.

Accordingly, IE Business School encourages ethical commitment as a part of the research and teaching work carried out by its teaching staff. Furthermore, students have the right to receive a quality education that must respond to the content laid down in the teaching programme for each training product.

The development of the principle of freedom of expression in research also requires the full responsibility of the researcher and his/her team. IE Business School and the various units in its organisational structure in which research work is carried out (Dean's office, Management College, research centers, professorships, forums, watchdogs, etc.) shall not be responsible for the content of the said research work or the conclusions reached by the corresponding authors. The same applies to the consultancy work and the reports drawn up at the initiative of the professors or persons in charge of institutions outside Instituto de Empresa, which shall be the exclusive responsibility of the corresponding authors.
