IE Business School offers open access to its multimedia materials over the Internet

Madrid, November 2008. IE Business School is the first business school in the world to offer open access to its multimedia materials for individual use under a Creative Commons license. The main advantage for users is that they can access high-quality content free of charge. The move is in line with IE's philosophy of innovation and knowledge-sharing.

IE's innovation and interactivity have led the school to develop 200 teaching materials covering all areas of management. The materials are used on IE Business School's onsite, blended and online programmes. 10% of materials given to IE students is in multimedia format. Use of this type of material is growing each year at the School, as are the levels of satisfaction of both students and professors. IE Business School's multimedia content is very popular among students and has received average evaluations of 8 out of 10.

Around 300 professors use the materials on the School’s regular programmes and there is great demand for new products, including interactive practical cases, games, role plays, interactive graphics and tutorials. Students use the tools to prepare classes for onsite and online programmes. The cases provide a base for the IE experience, which takes learning beyond individual study and involves group discussions and debates with professors in both onsite and online sessions. Programmes and materials are constantly updated to offer a high-quality e-learning model. The IE model has been recognised for the online content of its programmes on several occasions by international institutions in the form of prizes that include the Excellence in E-Learning and EFMD Multimedia Case awards.

IE multimedia cases include the following:

- The Barcelona Football Club case, which looks at the significant changes that took place at the club during the 2003/2004 season after Joan Laporta was elected chairman and brought in a new, younger management team. The case studies the strategy put in place and the structure proposed for the club in the search for leadership on football's world stage.
- The Fiat Stilo case, an interactive case that analyses the strategy for positioning a new product by Fiat Auto España from a variety of standpoints.
- The Masters Series Madrid case, a simulator whereby students assume responsibility and play the role of project manager for the event. Their responsibility is to make the tournament profitable and ensure its visibility in the media to attract spectators.
- The multimedia case that analyses the US economy, its strengths and weaknesses, the most relevant events in the country's history and the consequences of certain variations in its economy for the rest of the world.

Idoia Olazar, who is heading the project, explains that "IE is the first business school to implement an initiative of this type and we see it as an excellent way to generate interest in the multimedia materials we have produced since 2001, when we created our pioneering e-learning department to promote multimedia at IE. We also consider it a good opportunity to raise awareness of our activity in this field among potential students and firms that will now have open access to the material we produce and use in our class discussions".
