20/09/2009

This day will help strengthen relations between business and academia, with the aim of making them permanent allies in a new generation with knowledge and actions for good practices in sustainable development.

Sustainability is one of the key values of today´s innovative institutions: committed that are share with its stakeholders. However, the understanding of this concept is a complex task, because of the need to reasonably combine all economic, social, cultural and environmental aspects. Without such integration, future decisions and actions will not be lasting nor will they maximize growth.

This day has been designed with two objectives. First of all, to present and debate the concept of sustainability to IE University students, so they can incorporate the new way of thinking to their work and, secondly, establish networking between academia and business .

For planning practicality, the event has been structured into two closely integrates sections: Society-Culture-Sustainability and Economy-Environment-Sustainability. All workshops use useful case studies that have been selected for their relevance and accuracy.

The first section is highlighted by the presence of internationally renowned speakers, such as Yves Lesenfants or Jaime Lerner. Yves Lesenfants, originally from Belgium, is currently a technical advisor to the Multilateral Investment Fund Cluster for Sustainable Tourism (FOMIN) and the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), in addition to being a founding member of the Tropical Andes Program, based in Venezuela. Jaime Lerner, professional landscape & urban planner, is the town Mayor of Curitiba, Governor of Parana State and Chairman of the IAA (International Association of Architects).

The second section with have participants such as Javier Carrillo, Director for Economic Environment of IE Business School, Antonio Lucio Gil, Managing Director of the Mobility Foundation of the City of Madrid, Beat Anthamatten, President of Saas-Fee Tourismus and Raúl Revuelta, Director of Tourism Studies at IE University. Their participation will include a series of case studies all relevant to various sectors that will allow our students to forge their sustainability values. The key is to let them find answers to Why, How and When to focus on sustainability and what it seeks to achieve. Among the invited companies are Toyota, Spanish Red Electrica, Iberpistas Abertis, Ferrovial and BBVA.
