FRIDAY APRIL 27, 2012

Storefront for Art and Architecture will present \"Towards a Theory of Misbehavior,\" a Manifesto Series event showcasing different generational approaches towards architecture theory on the occasion of the release of The Sniper\'s Log: Architectural Chronicles of Generation X by Alejandro Zaera Polo on Friday April 27, 2012 from 7 to 9pm at the Storefront gallery.

The event will include a live staging of manifestos that will present different hypothesis and methodologies towards architectural acts of disobedience. The presentations will be followed by a discussion between the presenters moderated by Stan Allen.

Storefront\'s ongoing Manifesto Series is part of an effort to encourage the formulation of positions in relation to selected topics and instigate spirited discussion and exchange in a dynamic and polemical context. The format therefore differs from that of a typical symposium.

Rather than a synthetic lecture, participants are invited to present a concise, point-by-point manifesto of 4 minutes of length and a maximum of ten points, with the hope that the ideas exposed will provide a ground for discussion to test and discuss different hypotheses in real time. This is the 8th event in the Manifesto Series.

Presenters include:

Kenneth Frampton, Peter Eisenman. Bernard Tschumi, Cynthia Davidson, Jeff Kipnis, Stan Allen, Sylvia Lavin, Sanford Kwinter, Alejandro Zaera Polo, Michael Meredith, Anna Pla Català, Bjarke Ingels, Eva Franch i Gilabert

Date: Friday 26 May 2010. Time : 13.00. Refectorio IE University.

IE University finishes its GLOCAL: acting global, acting local Series with a lecture by John Hong and Jinhee Park titled Sustainable Minimalism.

John Hong is Adjunct Associate Professor of Architecture at Harvard University (US) and  Jinhee Park lectures in Architecture, Landscape Architecture, and Urban Planning and Design at  Harvard University (US).

Single Speed Design explores a version of sustainability that approaches design as a convergent, interdisciplinary, and collaborative venture. They favor an economy of means over an additive and redundant methodology: simultaneously exploring the different aspects of architecture, landscape, history, and social systems, so that minimum form can take maximum effect. The design firm run by Korean born John Hong and Jinhee Park, has defined a kind of \"sustainable minimalism\" using low-tech materials in a low-energy way. They first became known for the construction of a single family house in Lexington made mostly out of discarded demolition rubbish from the old Central Artery of Boston. By recycling of ordinary materials, the Big Dig House was an early move in a consistent philosophy that looks for environmental performance. Jinhee Park has just been awarded the AIA Young Architects Award for 2009; John Hong was awarded the same prize for 2006. With offices in both New York and Cambridge, their current buildings include projects of very different scale but same ambition: a house in Newton, a Clover food truck, the 8 Towers of Ordos 100 in inner Mongolia recently exhibited in Art Basel and an Exhibition and Cultural Space at the heart of the Heyri Art Valley in South Korea.

A title that compiles over thirty portraits of the most renowned architects of the last two centuries taken by this German photographer. Aside from the artist, the event will also be attended by Martha Thorne, executive director of the Pritzker Architecture Prize and associate dean at the IE University School of Architecture, author of the foreword; and architect Rafael Moneo, 1996 Pritzker Prize-winner and winner of the Príncipe de Asturias award for the Arts in 2012, who is one of the figures portrayed by Von Kruse.

With a meticulous, demanding and intuitive observation, Ingrid von Kruse has photographed the people responsible for the most outstanding projects in the world. Norman Foster, Oscar Niemeyer, Richard Meier or Zaha Hadid are some of the professionals that have stood before Von Kruse’s personal lens.

The photographer always works with her analogical Hasselblad camera, and only uses natural lighting. The good climate of each of the photographic sessions in personal settings, workspaces, or the architects’ recent constructions are reflected in each portrait. The result is a deep and intimate insight into each of the characters portrayed and their work.

The portraits in the book are complemented by statements and reflections by some of the architects in it. A selection of sketches, drawings and mockups completes the particular vision of this German artist. A selection of these portraits will be exhibited at Ivorypress on the day of the presentation.

Among the architects captured by Von Kruse’s lens are Tadao Ando, Gottfried Böhm, Mario Botta, Santiago Calatrava, David Chipperfield, Peter Eisenman, Frank O. Gehry, Meinhard von Gerkan, Hans Hollein, Bjarke Ingels, Helmut Jahn, Rem Koolhaas, Phyllis Lambert, Daniel Libeskind, Volkwin Marg, Rafael Moneo, Ryue Nishizawa, Ieoh Ming Pei, Dominique Perrault, Renzo Piano, Richard Rogers, Kazuyo Sejima, Álvaro Siza, Robert Venturi, Denise Scott Brown, Albert Speer, Oswald Mathias Ungers and Peter Zumthor.

Ingrid von Kruse was born in Hamburg and studied photography at the Polytechnic University in Essen (1978-1981). During the following years she began to focus more and more on portraiture. Her books have been the subject of several international exhibitions, such as Europe Taken Literally, Time and Moments and Venice — Voices between the Stone and the Sea. Her work has become an important part of various public and private collections.

This lecture is part of the \"INOUT: affecting architecture, expanding possibilities\" series that IE School of Architecture Professor Laura Martínez de Guereñu coordinates.

Stefano Casciani (born 1955 Rome) is a designer, critic, architect, curator, and consultant. He is especially known for his work with the prestigious architecture and design journal, Domus, where he has served as the deputy director since 2007. However, he began his affiliation with this Milan-based publication in 1979, when Alessandro Mendini invited him as a freelance editor.

At age 25 he was the Art Director for Zanotta.  He participated in the experimental activities of the Studio Alchimia and has worked as a communication consultant, art director, and designer for many design companies, among which are Alessi, Bisazza, Bticino, Cassina, Ivalo Lighting, Biennale di Venezia, Triennale di Milano, and City of Rome. He is internationally recognized today as an influential and singular figure in the design world due to his multifaceted career. Visiting Professor in design and architecture schools and universities in Italy and abroad, Casciani has written hundreds of articles and more than twenty books, mainly focusing on the relationships between architecture, design, and art. Casciani has served on numerous juries and received noteworthy awards such as the Compasso d\'Oro 2001 for the RAI television program \"Lessons of Design.\"

Up until February 2011, the INOUT lecture series will bring to IE University seven international experts that will provide their distinct vision on the diversification that is currently taking place in the world of architecture, a discipline in which not only the architect participates but also a group of professionals whose work is essential for the success of any project.
