In order to achieve this objective, IE will be organizing two activities in Spain´s Pavilion on May 11 and 14, and a further event on October 26. The first of these has been organized jointly between IE and ESADE, bringing together the deans of both schools with the deans of leading Chinese business schools and universities, including  CEIBS, Fudan and Beijing University. The meeting will serve as a platform for an in-depth discussion about the global challenges facing business schools.

Another of the activities focuses on social networking, and will be led by Professor Enrique Dans on May 14 in Spain´s Pavilion. In the same Pavilion, but at the later date of October 26, Professor Gonzalo Garland will present Caso España, an interactive case study which shows the landmarks of Spain´s political and economic landscape from 1973 to the present day, using macroeconomic data and an analysis of the main decisions made by the different governments that have presided over Spain during that time.

IE will also run two further academic activities in the Madrid Pavilion. The first will be held on June 4 as part of IE´s international Executive Education program: China an inside view.  The activity will comprise academic sessions led by Professor Eduardo Morcillo and European students participating in the program. Moreover, the Dean and Vice Dean of Architecture at IE University will be participating in the Madrid Pavilion´s ´Madrid Urban Forum 2010´,  where they will be exchanging knowledge and experiences with other international experts in areas like sustainability and the environment, infrastructures, transport, energy and social equilibrium.

Finally, on August 17 the Dean of IE University´s School of Architecture, Javier Quintana, will present the results of the summer workshop on sustainability and urban density held in Madrid, organized by IE School of Architecture and the Architectural Association of London.

 IE in China

IE runs a range of international programs through its international office in Shanghai (asiapacific.blogs.ie.edu). One such program is the residential period of IE´s International Executive MBA online, held at Fudan School of Management, taking place in June and November. Said residential period features lectures by Chinese professors from Fudan School of Management on subjects related to Chinese culture, history and business practices, coupled with visits to companies that bring students into direct contact with Chinese corporate realities.

IE´s International Executive MBA Biweekly also includes a week in Shanghai together with students of IE´s Global MBA.  This program is also run at Fudan School of Management, and comprises talks by senior managers of foreign firms operating in China - with a special focus on Spanish or European firms - who share their experiences of working in Asia.

In the executive education field IE has forged alliances in China with Cheung Kong Graduate School of Business with whom it partners for two programs. The first is Europe: an Inside View, designed for Chinese directors who want insights into corporate realities in the Western world, and which has been run at IE´s Madrid Campus for the last four years. The other program is the abovementioned China: an Inside View, which is the reciprocal program for western managers who want to learn more about Chinese corporate practices. It has been held in Beijing or Shanghai for the last four years. Both programs include not only class sessions but also visits to firms to round off the experience.

Shanghai World Expo 2010, which commences on May 1 and runs until October 31, is focused on the quality of life in cities. Shanghai, with a population of 20 million, will host the largest Expo in history. Spain has pinned all its hopes on the belief that the Expo will serve to showcase Spain in China, and has invested 55 million Euros in the project. This budget has enabled Spain to have the second largest Pavilion, with more than 7,000 m2, the largest being that of the host country, with a surface area of 100,000m2.

The Universal Expos have always had a tourist and leisure slant. The fact that this year the Expo is being held by China, the country with the greatest economic potential in the world, means that it is a unique opportunity for foreign countries, including Spain, to promote themselves.

These type of visits help students relate the theories learnt in class to real life experiences. Professor Bäcker explained that the ENDESA building uses several cooling systems both passive and semi-passive, such as air moisturizer, natural ventilation or the usage of thermal mass to reduce temperature fluctuation. Additionally, the building has a lot of natural light and uses innovative systems like ventilation displacement.

After Several year in operation, Bäcker explained that students also learned that some measure that architects had taken have not been successful - some having extremely costly maintenance. The students were impressed with the structuring of such a big building, with very modern facilities that enable two thousand people to work in fresh air, pleasant temperatures. The recycling system was also a highlight.

Last September, the students visited the headquarters of IDOM, currently under construction, and it is expected that they visit INTEMPER that manufactures indoor and garden walls, among other systems.

Storefront for Art and Architecture will present \"Towards a Theory of Misbehavior,\" a Manifesto Series event showcasing different generational approaches towards architecture theory on the occasion of the release of The Sniper\'s Log: Architectural Chronicles of Generation X by Alejandro Zaera Polo on Friday April 27, 2012 from 7 to 9pm at the Storefront gallery.

The event will include a live staging of manifestos that will present different hypothesis and methodologies towards architectural acts of disobedience. The presentations will be followed by a discussion between the presenters moderated by Stan Allen.

Storefront\'s ongoing Manifesto Series is part of an effort to encourage the formulation of positions in relation to selected topics and instigate spirited discussion and exchange in a dynamic and polemical context. The format therefore differs from that of a typical symposium.

Rather than a synthetic lecture, participants are invited to present a concise, point-by-point manifesto of 4 minutes of length and a maximum of ten points, with the hope that the ideas exposed will provide a ground for discussion to test and discuss different hypotheses in real time. This is the 8th event in the Manifesto Series.

Presenters include:

Kenneth Frampton, Peter Eisenman. Bernard Tschumi, Cynthia Davidson, Jeff Kipnis, Stan Allen, Sylvia Lavin, Sanford Kwinter, Alejandro Zaera Polo, Michael Meredith, Anna Pla Català, Bjarke Ingels, Eva Franch i Gilabert

A project by the firm architects at ch+qs  (the team Josemaría de Churtichaga , Associate Dean at IE and Cayetana de la Quadra-Salcedo) was featured in the NEW YORK TIMES style magazine online version recently.

Here is part of what it said:

The  Cineteca, located in Madrid\'s cultural center, \"El Matadero\" is  a sleekly designed film center dedicated to nonfiction and experimental cinema.  This is the latest section of this century-old structure to be remade into a cultural attraction. The Spanish architects transformed the space into the cool cinematic laboratory it is today. As if out of a scene out of “Metropolis,” the film archive is encased in a mesh of space-age hoses and gray wood paneling, and the effect is all shadows and filtered light.

The project seeks to position Segovia at the leading edge of technological innovation.

The presentation was made by prestigious British architect David Chipperfield, winner of the international competition held by Segovia´s city hall to build an architectural complex on the outskirts of the town. The complex will comprise an R&D building, a knowledge centre, museum, and a commercial and leisure centre for entrepreneurs together with a conference centre.

David Chipperfield yesterday recognised at IE University that he was \"very excited\" about the project, the main challenge of which \"is to project an idea through buildings\" with a broad range of designs. The presentation of the \"CAT Master Plan\" of Segovia marked the end of the second edition of the Architecture Week organised by IE School of Architecture, the division of the Charter of Architects in Segovia and Segovia City Hall.

Chipperfield, who has studios in London, Berlin, Milan and Shanghai, was joined in the event by the Vice-Dean of External Relations of IE School of Architecture, the architect Martha Thorne, and the representatives of the other three studios that won awards in the competition: Andrés Perea, Jerónimo Junquera, Juan Carlos Sancho and Sol Madridejos.

The event was attended by the Mayor of Segovia, Pedro Arahuetes, representatives from IE School of Architecture and the Charter of Architects, and numerous architecture students from IE University and other universities.
