The agreement was signed by the Vice Dean of Coordination from IE University, Juan Luis Martínez, and the chairman of the CONAMA Foundation, Gonzalo Echagüe. The National Environmental Congress, also called the Sustainability Summit, is an event that has been held in Madrid every two years since 1992. With more than 10,000 people attending its last edition, CONAMA has gained a foothold as one of the most important forums in our country, where experts in the field of sustainability have a venue for reflection and debate. With this agreement, IE University joins this important forum for scientific discussion by bringing to the congress the experience of its researchers in the field of the environmental situation in Spain. IE University will participate in the CONAMA 9 activities through working groups, technical workshops, debates and special activities, among others. The Vice Dean of Coordination from IE University, Juan Luis Martínez, stated that this agreement is yet further proof of IE University?s steadfast commitment to sustainability. ?The sustainability of our planet, conserving our biodiversity while improving quality of life and economic, social and environmental well-being mean that complex solutions have to be identified that can merge the achievement of equally desirable goals. We here at IE University suggest effective solutions to these new challenges; our biologists are not just scientists who work with the latest tools and research methods, rather thanks to their humanistic and management training, they are also capable of integrating the human being into their activities,? claimed Martínez. Martínez added that ?we here at IE University assume that man is not made for the environment; the environment is made for man?, and he stressed the fact that ?the goal is not to save nature from human action but to conserve it so that people can live better now and in the future?. Likewise, the chairman of the CONAMA Foundation, Gonzalo Echagüe, highlighted ?the importance of this congress, one of the most prominent ones on sustainability and the environment worldwide, which is strengthened by alliances with institutions with international outreach like IE University?. Echagüe added that CONAMA 9 ?will be highly participatory and open to debate?.

Sustainability is one of the key values of today´s innovative institutions: committed that are share with its stakeholders. However, the understanding of this concept is a complex task, because of the need to reasonably combine all economic, social, cultural and environmental aspects. Without such integration, future decisions and actions will not be lasting nor will they maximize growth.

This day has been designed with two objectives. First of all, to present and debate the concept of sustainability to IE University students, so they can incorporate the new way of thinking to their work and, secondly, establish networking between academia and business .

For planning practicality, the event has been structured into two closely integrates sections: Society-Culture-Sustainability and Economy-Environment-Sustainability. All workshops use useful case studies that have been selected for their relevance and accuracy.

The first section is highlighted by the presence of internationally renowned speakers, such as Yves Lesenfants or Jaime Lerner. Yves Lesenfants, originally from Belgium, is currently a technical advisor to the Multilateral Investment Fund Cluster for Sustainable Tourism (FOMIN) and the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), in addition to being a founding member of the Tropical Andes Program, based in Venezuela. Jaime Lerner, professional landscape & urban planner, is the town Mayor of Curitiba, Governor of Parana State and Chairman of the IAA (International Association of Architects).

The second section with have participants such as Javier Carrillo, Director for Economic Environment of IE Business School, Antonio Lucio Gil, Managing Director of the Mobility Foundation of the City of Madrid, Beat Anthamatten, President of Saas-Fee Tourismus and Raúl Revuelta, Director of Tourism Studies at IE University. Their participation will include a series of case studies all relevant to various sectors that will allow our students to forge their sustainability values. The key is to let them find answers to Why, How and When to focus on sustainability and what it seeks to achieve. Among the invited companies are Toyota, Spanish Red Electrica, Iberpistas Abertis, Ferrovial and BBVA.
