Monday 29th November at 4.00pm at IE University Campus in Segovia. Refectory. Conference presented by IE University.

The speaker will be Michael Wadleigh, well-known American film and documentary maker. Born in Akro, Ohio (US), his professional activity has mostly focused on independent cinema where he has enjoyed the praise of both critics and audience. Among its work, we can find the successful documentary on the Woodstock Festival, which became a symbol of American counter-culture and that won the Academy Award for Best Documentary in 1970. He has also directed documentaries around the figures of Jimi Hendrix and Janis Joplin and movies such as Wolfen. For the last twenty years he has devoted full time to several nonprofit educational-media organizations working mainly in Africa and Asia.

Michael Wadleigh will visit IE University to give a speech under the name of \"Homo sapiens report: the Future of Humanity\". During the conference he will list some of the problems related to unsustainable development: in 40 years it will not be possible to enjoy the same kind of life that in the present and it will be much worse for future generations  as we will eventually run out of resources. Governments and private corporations are delighted with the idea of a 400% increase in the overall production. Their only plans in order to save resources are increasing the efficiency and recycling, but these measures according to reports on this subject would only mean a 10% of it all. These policies will NOT only damage the future of mankind, but they will also sign its death sentence.

Mass Media: The \"Other\" Most Mismanaged U.S. Industry (Besides Airlines & Autos).

Corporate mass media executives are supposed to maximize returns (in dividends and stock price growth) for stockholders; that is their primary fiduciary responsibility. However, like in other major U.S. industries over 25 years, their most obvious goal has been making themselves rich. Executives did this by managing publicly owned companies as if they owned them; pursuing mergers/acquisitions with bogus goals of \"synergy\" and \"convergence\"; misleading investors, journalists, and the public about true profitability; and hiding how badly managed (operationally and strategically) U.S. mass media companies are. In many ways, this is a story of collective, slow suicide.   Speaker: Professor Dane Claussen, Point Park University (United States) and Editor Journalism and Mass Communication Educator (AEJMC).

In this talk Begoña González Cuesta will debate about a research project we are developing: it consists in analyzing contemporary images as spaces to create thought about margins and as places to represent marginal realities in marginal ways. We are interested in three related dimensions of the \'marginal\': marginal realities, margins as they are represented in images, and marginal or subversive images.

Specifically, we are focused on the study of the representation of violence, suffering, marginalization and transcendence through marginal spaces: frontiers, thresholds, limits, spaces out of frame. We are analyzing its ethics and poetics, trying to know how those images are formally constructed and which thoughts about marginal realities are generated in them.

Begoña González has a Ph.D. in Literature from Universidad de Navarra (ES). She is a professor in Audiovisual Analysis at IE School of Communication where she is currently Associate Dean of Academic Affairs. Her research and teaching interests are centered on film and audiovisual language and analysis, focusing on the aesthetic, anthropological, ethic and communicative dimensions of contemporary screen works.  Her current research focuses on images as ways to construct thought in non fiction films, author\'s films and new audiovisual proposals. She believes in the need of studying the new ways of audiovisual language that think about the complexity of reality, about margins, analyzing its conflicts through images and sounds.

Held by: Stephen Reese, Vice-Dean of the School of Journalism of the University of Textas Austin.

As a concentrated voice of authority, the news media have traditionally played a powerful role in the framing of public issues. The new media environment, however, has become globalized across platforms of digital communication, raising questions about the power and role of journalism in shaping social understanding.  In this talk, I will consider these important trends of media globalization and how it relates to the journalism profession.  Journalists continue to be vulnerable to manipulation, as shown by my own research on the US experience tracking how they covered the Bush administration\'s \"war on terror.\" But other international developments provide hope for more multi-lateral framings, a more cosmopolitan professional perspective,  and greater engagement between citizens and journalists.

Date: February 18th, 2013

Time: 7:00 pm

Where: María de Molina 4, Room E-108

Abstract

Globalization is an unstable process of systemic worldwide reorganization of economic, cultural and artistic relations & activities. However, in the globalized art world key \'gatekeeper\' institutions based in the US and Western Europe maintain a proprietorial grip on the system\'s development. This lecture considers the power of these organizations in market, socio-political and ideological terms.

He is Director of its new Centre for Global Futures in Art Design and Media, founded in 2011. Thursday, November 17th
Room: F-101, María de Molina, 2, Madrid
Hour:  18.30 – 20.00

Abstract:
The foreign correspondents have been with us for at least 300 years. But in recent years, the big western media do not stop closing foreign bureaus and hundreds of correspondents join the ranks of the unemployed. The economic crisis, the introduction of new technologies, citizen journalism and a growing lack of interest in international news explain why this traditionally prestigious position is an endangered species. It’s becoming extinct. Will it survive? Nobody knows. But it will never be the same. In the meantime everybody is making experiments with new projects in the field of international news.

Short Bio:
Juan Llobell is deputy managing editor at Capital, a Spanish business magazine, since 2008. Previously, he held various positions at Expansión, the leading economic newspaper in Spain, where he has developed most of his career. Between 2005 and 2008 he was New York correspondent for Expansión and Actualidad Económica. He has covered numerous international events as a special correspondent: the annual meetings of the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank, the Davos forum in Switzerland, the World Trade Organization.

Title: Makeover television, audiences, and narratives of possibility:

Abstract: What do audiences make of makeover shows such as What Not to Wear and Queer Eye for the Straight Guy? This paper is based on a large audience research study that looks at how viewers discuss US makeover shows. I argue that the shows evoke an inner self at odds with an outer self in order to precipitate a crisis of the self that advertised products are supposed to fix. Audiences are well-versed in discourses of inner and outer self and emotional expression, but engage only ambivalently with the shows\' instruction and consumer appeals.

Short Bio: Dr. Katherine Sender is an associate professor at the Annenberg School for Communication, University of Pennsylvania. She is the author of the book \"Business, not Politics: The Making of the Gay Market\" (2004) and many other articles on GLBT media and marketing. She is currently combining her interests in queer and gender studies with popular television and consumer culture through a large audience research project focusing on makeover reality shows. Her new book, \"The Big Reveal: Makeover Television, Audiences, and the Promise of Transformation,\" will be published by New York University Press in 2009.
