According to Professor Francisco Navarro Castillo, “In Spain, 50% of companies do not have cost systems, and the other 50% are very much behind in this field. In 2007 cost systems will be essential because structural funds will no longer be around as such. This means that we will be obliged to have an economy with extremely competitive products  and services that offer a high level of added value. These conditions require good systems that determine costs accurately”. With thirty years of experience, Professor Navarro believes that costs should be directly linked to productivity, competitiveness, strategy and the macroeconomic environment in which each company operates. He has authored numerous teaching notes and research papers, has set up cost systems for various companies, and is currently writing a study on costs in telecommunications, with a team from Telefónica.

Professor Navarro was an engineer in the Spanish naval forces for twelve years, during the 70s and 80s, working on projects that were pioneering in terms of sophisticated, quality and engineering. At Instituto de Empresa he has held numerous executive positions and, in 1999,  formed part of the team responsible for implementing the school’s technology systems. In his own words “As a director, I have focused on the design of highly competitive programmes”.

He is currently Vice Dean of Development and Marketing of Functional programmes and Associate Director of Instituto de Empresa.

Francisco Navarro is a PhD candidate in Business Administration  at Universidad Complutense de Madrid.
