IE announces the winners of the 5th edition of its Prize for Economic Journalism in Latin America

This year’s entries for the IE BUSINESS SCHOOL Prize for Economic Journalism in Latin America comprised over 250 articles, reports, interviews and other media items from more than 100 media based in Latin America, authored by some 120 leading economic journalists in the region. The competition will award $11,000 in prize money.

"Ciencia Made in Chile (Science Made in Chile)" written by journalist Carmen Mieres  and published in Chilean business daily DIARIO FINANCIERO was selected by the judges’ panel of the 5th edition of the IE Business School Prize for Economic Journalism in Latin America as the Best Article in the Daily Press Category.  The judges based their decision on the way Mieres handled her sources and for her research into the opportunities science brings in terms of developing new production sectors that generate greater added value.

The Prize for the Best Article in the Non-Daily Press Category has gone to “Dispositivos médicos asumen liderato (Medical Devices Take the Lead)” by Evelyn Fernandez, published in Costa Rica Journal EL FINANCIERO. The article examines a high-value economic sector in the Central American country, namely the manufacture of medical supplies.

The judges’ panel of this 5th edition of IE’s Prize for Economic Journalism in Latin America comprises directors from the organizations behind the prize - IE BUSINESS SCHOOL, CAF and SOFTLAND - coupled with key players from the world of journalism and communication that include CNN and Wall Street Journal.

The judges also awarded prizes to two runners up. “Competitividade. A batalha brasileira em tempos da crise” authored by journalists Cledovãnia Pereira and Renata Moura and published in Brazilian daily TRIBUNA DO NORTE was the runner up in the daily press category. "Emprender entre escombros" by journalist Genaro Mejía published in FORBES México was the runner up in the non-daily press category.

SPECIAL AWARDS FOR PORTAFOLIO (COLOMBIA) AND LA NACION (ARGENTINA)

The 5th edition of the IE Business School Prize for Economic Journalism in Latin America also recognized two media organizations for their work promoting economic and entrepreneurial culture in Latin America.

PORTAFOLIO, based in Colombia, was the winner of the best daily press category for its broad coverage of economic issues. Portafolio is a business daily that belongs to the EL TIEMPO group. It was created in 1993 and now has a 50-strong workforce and more than 150 freelance collaborators who generate over 23,000 news articles a year in its print edition and more than 37,000 for its online edition.

The COMUNIDAD DE NEGOCIOS supplement, which forms part of Argentinian daily LA NACION, won the non-daily press category, for its work disseminating economic information and its contribution to corporate advancement in Argentina. The supplement, presented this year, combines a print edition on Monday with new journalistic formats such as meetings with different economic communities in Argentina.

The Prizes are sponsored by CAF – Development Bank of Latin America - and Softland, as well as enjoying support from Iberia, Cinco Días, CNN En Español and Casa de America. They will be presented on October 22 in a ceremony held at Casa de America (Madrid), which is a sponsor of the event. Cinco Días newspaper is the media partner and IBERIA is the official airline.
