Doctoral Programs

What´s the difference between the DBA and PhD?

IE Business School offers two types of doctoral degrees: Doctor in Business Administration (DBA) and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD). The DBA is equivalent to a conventional PhD in some respects. Both must make a contribution to knowledge and entail rigorous courses with a heavy emphasis on research. The selection of a particular doctoral degree should be based on the research focus and the approach one wishes to apply to that research.

DBA is a professional doctorate for managers with an MBA. Its focus is on the application of theoretical knowledge to the business practice, rather than the development of new theory. It is a program of research-based management development aimed at developing the capacity to make a significant contribution to management practice. In contrast, PhD focuses on building a strong research foundation in a particular discipline. The DBA keeps the academic rigor, while applying those characteristics to addressing issues of practical relevance to the manager rather than to the academic.
