Dual degree program allows students to train as lawyers in England and Spain

IE University in Madrid has joined forces with the prestigious College of Law to create an LL.B degree in Civil and English Law combining study of the civil and common law traditions. The innovative course is open to students undertaking the IE University LL.B. On successful completion of the four-year dual degree study program students will receive both the IE LL.B and the College of Law’s LL.B in Civil and English Law meaning that they are able to qualify as lawyers in the English, Welsh and Spanish jurisdictions.

The LL.B in Civil and English Law was recently accredited in England and Wales as a qualifying law degree by the Joint Academic Stage Board - the regulator with responsibility for the academic stage of legal training which is controlled jointly by the Solicitors Regulation Authority and the Bar Standards Board.

The program is designed to meet the growing demand for cross-border legal advice and qualifications and dovetails with the ambitions of both The College of Law and IE Law School to be at the forefront of providing legal education to the international market.

The new LL.B will be taught in English at IE University’s campuses in Segovia and Madrid.  During that time students will also undertake a range of online modules covering the foundations of English Law, taught by The College of Law. In the final year, students will study either the Legal Practice Course at any of the College’s eight centers in England or the Bar Professional Training Course at its London Bloomsbury or Birmingham centers.

IE’s LL.B has already been accredited by ANECA (the Spanish regulatory authority) as a qualifying law degree for the Spanish legal profession. Focusing on the realities of legal practice, the degree uses active learning methods and has attracted students of ten different nationalities - Spanish, French, Belgian, Dutch, Swedish, British, Portuguese, Italian, Brazilian and Polish.

Soledad Atienza, Director of IE University’s Bachelor of Laws and Co-Chair of the Academic Committee of the International Bar Association (IBA) said: “The sector is increasingly demanding professionals that can practice in more than one jurisdiction, particularly when one is a common law jurisdiction and the other follows the civil law tradition".

Professor Nigel Savage, Chief Executive of The College of Law said “In business as in life you are judged by the company you keep. Like the College, IE is a world class operation that has made enormous strides in the global market in recent years and which operates with the same values and mission as the College. We share a commitment to developing ground-breaking forms of undergraduate legal education drawing on the civil law heritage of Spain and the common law heritage with which we are familiar. We are therefore delighted to be collaborating on this new degree program which will enable students to qualify in both jurisdictions and practice law on a global footing.”

IE University is an extension to the model of IE Business School recognized as one of the leading business schools in the world, and focuses on providing an international education with an emphasis on entrepreneurship.   Its programs are delivered in English and attract students from more than eighty nations. The IE Law School has run academic programs for legal professionals since 1973 and has been listed among the world’s best law schools in the Financial Times Global Legal Education 2011 Reportfor two consecutive years.

The College of Law of England and Wales is the largest provider of professional legal education and training in Europe and is the preferred LPC training provider for 30 major law firms, including three of the six biggest in the world – Allen & Overy, Clifford Chance and Linklaters. It was the first independent institution to be granted degree awarding powers in the UK and launched an undergraduate LL.B law degree this year.
