Every year, IE School of Architecture and Design brings at least four special guests to speak to our undergraduate students. This year, we have selected experts with a compelling view of sustainability as evidenced through their varied outlooks and contributions to the practice of architecture.

 

Matthias Schuler & Anja Thierfelder

Matthias Schuler and Anja Thierfelder visited us on November 30 and gave lectures on Lightscapes and the Collaboration between Architect and Climate Engineer.

Matthias Schuler is one of the CEOs of Transsolar. He graduated from the University of Stuttgart with a degree in engineering studies, and founded the company in 1992. Schuler works on projects in Germany and elsewhere in cooperation with architects such as Kazuyo Sejima, Frank O. Gehry, Steven Holl, Jean Nouvel, Diller Scofidio + Renfro und Renzo Piano. Since 2001, Schuler has taught at Harvard University’s Graduate School of Design.

Anja Thierfelder is an architect. She was has taught at the University of Stuttgart and at the University of Limerick, Ireland. She also works as an editor and photographer. Among her books includes Transsolar KlimaEngineering, 2002. She works closely with Transsolar, contributing in the fields of bionics and the providing connections between the arts and physics. In 2016 installation “Lightscapes – local identity, exploring a forgotten resource” in collaboration with Transsolar at the Venice Architecture Biennale.

As part of these special lectures on sustainability, Susan Conger-Austin will be visiting our undergraduate students on December the 1st with her lecture Out of Reality: A Balancing Act

 

Anna Heringer

Anna Heringer will close the special lecture series on sustainability on Monday January 30, showing us how architecture can be a tool to improve lives.

As an architect and Honorary Professor of the UNESCO Chair of Earthen Architecture, Building Cultures, and Sustainable Development, she focuses on the use of natural building materials. She has been actively involved in development cooperation in Bangladesh since 1997. Her diploma project, the METI School in Rudrapur, was completed in 2005 and was awarded the Aga Khan Award for Architecture in 2007. Over the years, Anna has completed further projects in Asia, Africa, and Europe. She has received numerous honors, including the Loeb Fellowship. Her work has been widely published and exhibited at, among others, the MoMA New York, the V&A Museum in London and the Venice Biennale. In 2013, along with Andres Lepik and Hubert Klumpner, she launched the Laufen Manifesto whereby practitioners and academics from around the world contribute to defining guidelines for a humane design culture. 

On November 9, we invited Angela Brady, from RIBA and Brady Mallalieu Architects to speak to our Bachelor in Architecture students on Housing Ourselves in a Changing World, as part of the lecture series On Stewardship on Sustainability.

This series started on the October 4 with Belinda Tato, co-founder of the firm ecosistema urbano. Her presentation was titled: From Ego Design to Eco Design towards Network Design.
