This subject introduces students to the study of political concepts that are central to thinking about political life, from the ancient Greeks to the early modern period. This course examines principal ideas of major early political theorists, including Plato, Aristotle, St. Augustine, St. Thomas Aquinas, Machiavelli, Hobbes, Rousseau, and Locke, among others. The course emphasizes the principles of a just political order: natural law, civic virtue, and constitutionalism.
