Professor Diestre’s research interests flow around two distinct themes. The first is at the interface of corporate strategy and environmental management. More specifically, his research explores how a firm’s ability to comply with environmental regulation has an impact on its diversification strategy. “One of the most interesting findings of my research is that -sometimes- being ‘green’ might constrain a firm’s range of available diversification options”.

His second stream of research is in the domain of new technology-based organizations and R&D alliances. He is particularly interested in exploring how the risks of knowledge appropriation shape new ventures’ selection of R&D partners. He has found that “for many entrepreneurial firms looking for R&D partnerships, the key issue is not simply who is potentially the most attractive partner but the safest one”.

His work appears in publications such as the Academy of Management Journal, Strategic Management Journal, and Journal of Management Studies. He is a member of the Editorial Review Board of the Academy of Management Journal and the Strategic Management Journal.

Moreover, Luis believes that there is an important degree of overlap between research and teaching activities. “Class discussions are characterized by a back-and-forth flow between the abstract and the concrete. It is amazing how effectively students are able to apply theoretical frameworks to understand specific situations, and at the same time, how students’ diverse experiences help to build new thinking models”.
