A learnaholic with a continuous drive to improve and push myself out of my comfort zone in order to excel in my field. Having worked in the travel and tourism industry for over 14 years, I shifted tracks to human resources to learn how to empower people to be the best version of themselves. As a Fellow of the Josh Bersin Academy, I facilitated conversations with HR leaders across the globe on challenges that companies faced during the pandemic and problem-solved through collaboration and shared learning. Presently, I am working as a HR trainer, training corporate clients on HR topics along with vital skills for the workplace.

Challenging.
WHAT WERE SOME OF THE MAIN CHALLENGES THAT YOU ENCOUNTERED ON YOUR WAY? HOW DID YOUR MASTER’S PROGRAM AND IE UNIVERSITY HELP YOU THROUGH THESE CHALLENGES?
I faced a few challenges. Firstly, I was homesick from my family in Dubai. To help me make the most of the master’s, IE University encouraged me to devote my time to networking to further my professional goals. That’s how I was selected as Vice President of the IE Public Speaking Club. Through this club, I built a great network across the different schools. Additionally, I was recommended by an IE University alumnus, Pablo Torres, to conduct a masterclass on revenue management in tourism for Alicante University students, which was a great experience.
Secondly, I did not know a lot about HR. Even though I had worked for several years, I wasn’t confident about the field. During the master’s, I met professors who are working HR professionals and learned a lot from them in class and one-to-one. What’s more, I was encouraged to read HR journals such as those published by the Josh Bersin Academy to build up my understanding and knowledge. Ultimately, I got to work with Josh Bersin, my HR guru, after completing the course. Additionally, the consulting projects helped to put my new knowledge into practice and analyze real life challenges with an analytical mind.
Finally, not speaking Spanish was a challenge. One of the best things IE University does is to hold free Spanish classes for its students, which is a big advantage. I feel proud to have completed my basic certification in Spanish.
HOW DID YOUR EXPERIENCE AT IE UNIVERSITY HELP YOU IN YOUR PROFESSIONAL CAREER?
IE University helped me to gain a different perspective. I now have a consultant mindset when it comes to analyzing challenges faced by organizations. The networking also helped me to understand a lot about business within different industries.
This experience also enabled me to join the Big Reset Research at the Josh Bersin Academy and develop as a HR trainer.
IN WHAT WAY HAS THE PROGRAM CHANGED YOUR LIFE PROFESSIONALLY AND PERSONALLY?
Professionally, the program has enabled me to better manage my time and work, with a better understanding of my work-life balance. In addition, I have developed key analytical and coaching skills.
My time at IE University was completely outside of my comfort zone. I learned to be more resilient, develop my networking skills, give back to the community through the IE Public Speaking Club and learn basic Spanish.
TELL US ABOUT AN AVERAGE DAY AT YOUR WORK.
As a HR Trainer, I have the wonderful opportunity to train corporate clients in HR management, power skills and public speaking.
My workday starts with my commute to the training institute. Once I reach the institute, I make sure that the training room is in perfect order. I welcome the students with an icebreaker session and continue with the rest of the session. The classes last for about two to three hours and the students often ask me for advice regarding their career.
I coordinate with the administration staff to make sure that there are conversions for training enquiries. As a trainer, I have the privilege of influencing and helping people learn how to practice within their organizations.
DO YOU HAVE ANY ADVICE FOR IE UNIVERSITY STUDENTS AND ALUMNI WHO ARE LOOKING TO PURSUE A CAREER IN HR? WHAT SKILLS ARE NECESSARY TO EXCEL IN YOUR FIELD?
The field of human capital is both exciting and challenging, particularly during the pandemic. Now is truly the best time to be in HR!
The most important skills are strong written and verbal communication skills, intercultural sensitivity and coaching skills. In addition, you need an analytical mindset and to be proactive, adaptable and a great team player.
TELL US ABOUT THE IE UNIVERSITY ALUMNI COMMUNITY AND THE IMPACT THEY HAVE HAD IN YOUR LIFE AND CAREER. WHY DO YOU THINK IT IS IMPORTANT TO ENGAGE WITH THE ALUMNI COMMUNITY?
The alumni community is a very strong network for opportunities, projects, career advice and even personal guidance. For example, I received support and advice on enrolling on the Master in Talent Development & Human Resources. Additionally, I collaborated with alumni for the IE Public Speaking Club and, through my contact with an alumnus, I had the opportunity to hold a virtual class for Alicante University tourism students.
WHAT’S THE BEST CAREER ADVICE YOU HAVE EVER RECEIVED?
“Love your work, not your organization.” This quote by A.P.J. Abdul Kalam always inspires me to develop my craft and to not get stuck in a golden cage.
WHAT IS NETWORKING LIKE ON THE PROGRAM?
There are several ways of networking at IE University. The professors are also experienced professionals who work in varied industries, while your classmates come from varied and multicultural backgrounds with different perspectives.
IE University clubs are another major avenue for building a strong network, and the Rewire Magazine helps you build up your visibility by publishing articles. Next, guest lecturers are great for building up your LinkedIn network and profile. Finally, the alumni network is a very powerful tool for seeking support, guidance and opportunities.

WHY DID YOU CHOOSE TO STUDY THIS PROGRAM AT IE UNIVERSITY?
I was looking for several options for HR courses in Dubai, India and Europe. A family friend in Spain recommended IE University as they encourage practical, relevant learning and are one of the top universities in Europe.
And so I researched IE University, spoke with alumni and applied. The main USP of the program is that the professors are working professionals and have up-to-date knowledge about what’s happening in the industry.
WHAT IS THE ONE THING YOU WISHED YOU KNEW AS A STUDENT? WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO STUDENTS WHO ARE ABOUT TO BEGIN THE PROGRAM?
I wish I knew how to manage my time more effectively with the projects. I would recommend that students use technology to manage their schedules more effectively. Additionally, I’d suggest assigning project leaders for the group assignments, so that they can drive the project to completion.
WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR FAVORITE MEMORY OF THE EXPERIENCE?
My favorite memory was the sales pitch I did to Santiago Iñiguez de Onzoño, President of IE University, for our change management project to increase club member engagement in IE University clubs during COVID-19.
It was a collaborative effort with clubs, IE Campus Life, the different schools and IE University professors and students. Our work was highly commended by Mr. Iñiguez! After the presentation, I handed all of the research and details to him with a sustainable follow-up plan.
