    Speakers:

Martha Thorne. Dean, IE School of Architecture and Design

Cristina Mateo. Associate Dean, IE School of Architecture and Design

Jennifer Durand. Owner, Office of Versatile Architecture

During the pandemic, the virtual world helped us stay connected, yet it has also contributed to a false sense of connectedness. Increasingly, there is more potential to immerse ourselves into a world other than IRL (in-real-life) with glasses, helmets and other gadgets…and without our life seeming to lose one iota of intensity. But what is this new virtual space – Metaverse – and how will its democratization evolve?

What type of interactions will we do there? Initial attempts demonstrate a focus on entertainment, gaming, dancing, talking… but is that all immersive environments are good for? What qualities of physical spaces can we translate? Are third spaces ideal for the metaverse? Some key features of third spaces that foster interactions in the physical space are:

    • Home Away From Home: People can visit whenever they wish & feel at home, without worrying about dress code, rules, or money spent
    • Knowledge Exchange: people from different ages, fields, and cultures learn from each other
    • Network Expansion: new connections and new friends are always possible

IE Tower (Paseo de la Castellana 259) – 20.03

    Speakers:

Soledad Atienza. Dean, IE Law School

    Andy Ramos. Partner, Pérez-Llorca

The society is preparing for the advent of the metaverse: a network of 3D virtual worlds, where humans can interact with each other socially and economically, mainly through avatars. Many voices are now demanding new regulations for the metaverse, to protect its users when interacting in this virtual world and to close an apparent gap between reality and the law. In this session, we will discuss the current status of the metaverse and the need of such new legal framework.

IE Tower (Paseo de la Castellana 259) – 19.02

    Speakers:

Lee Newman. Dean, IE Business School

David Alayón. Chief Foresight Officer & Co-founder, Innuba

For years, companies have shaped the economy and society in which we live, creating sophisticated mechanisms to increase their profits regardless of the impact they generate. What happens when we reach the limits of our socio-economic system? And when the planet suffers from unsustainable “growth”? What happens when all of us, consumers and employees, acquire a higher level of awareness? In the future, only socially, environmentally and economically sustainable companies will be relevant to society and innovation plays a fundamental role in this sustainable transformation and in creating value by combining the triple bottom line.

IE Tower (Paseo de la Castellana 259) – 19.03

    Speaker:

Ikhlaq Sidhu. Incoming Dean and Professor, IE School of Science and Technology, in transition from UC Berkeley

Robert Polding. Director of the Bachelor in Data and Business Analytics, IE School of Science and Technology

IE Tower (Paseo de la Castellana 259) – 15.01

    Speaker:

Bernhard Niesner. CEO & Co-Founder, Busuu

Busuu was founded in 2008 after Adrian and Bernhard met during their IMBA at IE. Today, Busuu is one of the largest language learning platforms in the world with over 120m users. Bernhard is going to share some key learnings from his journey from the early start until the acquisition by Chegg (NYSE:CHGG) in January 2022 for 385m EUR.

IE Tower (Paseo de la Castellana, 259) – 15.04

    Speaker:

David Suárez. Partner, Middle East People & Organization Leader, PwC

Humanity has entered a period of disruption and change that is unprecedented. Technology convergence is accelerating the pace of change, creating opportunities for growth like never before.   Pandemics and geopolitics aside, the next 20-30 years are likely to be some of the most exciting (and even frightening) in human history.

What role will you play in this new game? Do you have what it takes to thrive in this new world, full of opportunity? What mindset is required for you to re-think your job, your corporate life, your business and your future, considering we are on the verge of adding an additional 20-30 healthy years to our lifespans?

In this session we will focus on personal growth, habits we can build to optimize our energy and maximise performance, and how to use our brains as our primary tool for accelerating our learning and for discovering new possibilities to reinvent ourselves, our careers, and our lives.

A technical protocol (TCP/IP) designed to copy information gave birth to the Internet and nowadays we have a technical protocol (Blockchain) that is designed to move value. This means that financial intermediaries, mainly banks and governments, are being disrupted at an essential level. What are the key elements driving the transition from Web2 users to Web3 stakeholders? Why is talent fleeing from Big Tech to DeFi and DAOs?

Join us to understand how NFTs are not just bored apes but the frontline of limited information economic dynamics. Also, Web3 as the NFT’s essential container and a little bit about CBDCs and how the Token Economy will shape financials over the next decade.

IE Tower (Paseo de la Castellana 259) – 17.02

    Speaker:

Alberto Levy. Associate Professor International MBA Program. IE Business School

We will explore how combining art with technology prepares us to address global issues.

Human beings are designed to use both sides of the brain but rigid educational processes limit us most of the time to exploring just one world – either art bringing design, creativity, and imagination or technology coupled with analysis, logic, and math. But why not combine both of them? Art advances the experiences of technology, while the technology advances the possibilities of art. As the impact of the pandemic has reached all corners of society with its unprecedented challenges, now is the time to fight back by using innovative means to make a positive impact in the world.

Join us and Alberto Levy, designer, founder ant technologist and International MBA Professor, as he shares his insights on how applying the equation of art and technology introduces new capabilities and creativity in generating impact. Alberto is considered an “Innovation Evangelist” by the Harvard Business Review Summit and the World Economic Forum. In this edition of the Alumni Weekend, Alberto’s executive strategist and creative soul will empower and inspire us to be innovators by design.

The Covid-19 pandemic, the Ukraine-Russia conflict together with some other restrictions in the energy industry, among other structural elements, are pushing prices up. After decades of low interest rates and very low movement in prices, the world is learning how to live under price pressures. What is next in this scenario? What would be the role of central banks? Is geopolitics influencing these rapid increase in prices?
