Data Science Bootcamp: Always at the Forefront | Bootcamp Diary by Hector Martín

My perception: Due to my engineering background, I was taught that an engineer’s job is “to manage uncertainties”. Since I started my professional career, there have been endless potential risks that have come true. One day, I wondered how I could progress from understanding trends to getting specific and reliable information. I discovered how data management and understanding and “massaging” data can create value and enable better decision-making.

My interest: The bankruptcies of profitable infrastructures in the past, the quick drop in the price of oil, the disappearance of formerly sumptuous companies, and my mathematical background led me to explore tools that allow me to create value from data. Whomever has the best information can build the best business.

What I got: During the Data Science Bootcamp, I have learned the tools that are needed to turn raw data into useful information for companies, governments and people. Python and mathematical models and techniques are not easy to learn, but IE University gives you the necessary tools, methods and resilience to overcome all the difficulties, despite the intensity of the program. As Winston Churchill would say, finishing the Bootcamp is not “the beginning of the end, but the end of the beginning.” Overall, after the Data Science Bootcamp, I have a more complete education and am better positioned to meet current market demands.

During this program, you will develop the ability to research by yourself and build new models. The Bootcamp teaches you not only about data, but also how to break down a job into simple parts, as well as storytelling and communication techniques. You therefore acquire a comprehensive consultancy skill set, which is further enhanced through the shared experiences of senior data professionals who frequently come to speak with us. As Data Science Bootcamp alumni, these people offer us a window into our future.

The most important output: You are not alone in the Bootcamp. The best part has been making new lifelong friends. Collaboration among classmates is critical for overcoming mistakes and difficulties and discovering different approaches. You can spend hours trying to correct an error, but with your classmate’s help everything goes by in a couple of minutes. You are not alone.
