{"id":7331,"date":"2019-03-13T12:54:03","date_gmt":"2019-03-13T11:54:03","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.ie.edu\/exponential-learning\/blog\/?p=7331"},"modified":"2019-06-24T11:44:52","modified_gmt":"2019-06-24T09:44:52","slug":"ten-qualities-modern-leader","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ie.edu\/lifelong-learning\/blog\/innovation\/ten-qualities-modern-leader\/","title":{"rendered":"Ten qualities of a modern leader"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As today\u2019s economic and political environments are full of more moving parts than ever, and competition is causing even more sweeping industrial changes, the ever-present challenge of innovation remains the same: adapt, or die. <strong>The organizations that will be best equipped to adapt to the new economy are those with the best traits at the helm<\/strong>. What does the modern leader need? While the literature has lots of differing answers, here are <strong>ten qualities that should serve as the foundation for the modern leader.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4>Flexibility<\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A significant portion of the Innovation for Growth HiOP will help you be more comfortable with being flexible. It\u2019s no wonder that <strong>flexibility is a highly sought-after skill not only in leadership roles but all the way down to entry-level and internship positions<\/strong>. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fastcompany.com\/3004914\/5-characteristics-great-leaders\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fast Company<\/span><\/i><\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">said it best when it started off an article about essential leadership traits with flexibility: \u201cleaders have to be able to change course; that is, first make sure their businesses will survive, and then find a new way to reach their goals.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4>Keep Learning<\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As is the aim of Innovation for Growth and all our other HiOP programs, constant, <strong>lifelong learning is the hallmar<\/strong>k. John Jantsch, on his <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ducttapemarketing.com\/7-traits-of-the-modern-leader\/\"><b>Duct Tape Marketing blog<\/b><\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">summed it up like this: \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Today\u2019s teacher understands the speed of change and further understands that in order to have any reason for people to follow, they must provide a sense of what\u2019s next, what\u2019s ahead \u2013 the only way to do that is inquire vigorously, every day.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4>Communication<\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How else could you get your team behind you if it were not for good communication? This <strong>not only shines through in words because we have all seen those people who have a great script but don&#8217;t have the results to show that they followed through<\/strong>. It&#8217;s no wonder that <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fastcompany.com\/3004914\/5-characteristics-great-leaders\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fast Company<\/span><\/i><\/a><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u00a0<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">says those \u201c\u2026who communicate well are those who not only share their thoughts with employees, but also let their strength and personal character show through in their communication, and empower those who work for them by defining the company\u2019s goal and showing how to get there.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4>Be a networking and relationship-building master<\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To get people to follow you, motivating them to do so is a must. But this should be achieved not just to advance the leader&#8217;s individual goals; you have to take everyone else\u2019s into account. <strong>Building relationships are important for getting employees to coalesce and fight harder for achieving the greater good for the organization. And, as leaders effectively network, they must also have the company&#8217;s best interest at heart.<\/strong> This will, as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/deeppatel\/2017\/03\/22\/11-powerful-traits-of-successful-leaders\/#b1124ea469fc\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0Deep Patel in <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Forbes<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> explains, build vast networks that cast a wide net from a leader and his or her organization\u2019s particular niche \u201c\u2026<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">leaders establish impactful relationships with customers, clients, partners and even competitors.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4>Delegation Skills<\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While we as humans often want to have total control, that is easier said than done. <strong>Knowing how to properly delegate\u00a0is a critical quality because it exemplifies how well you, as a leader, understand your team.<\/strong> It is not merely assigning tasks to someone within the structure without any regard for whether the person you assign the task to can do it. If you hand off tasks to the best-equipped person, you&#8217;ll prove HR <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/hrcsuite.com\/modern-leadership\/\"><b>C-Suite\u2019s<\/b><\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">point that \u201c[g]reat leadership capitalizes on the strengths of the team to deliver strong results for the business.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4>Responsibility<\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This factor is one that can often plague organizations, and it\u2019s because, as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fastcompany.com\/3004914\/5-characteristics-great-leaders\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fast Company<\/span><\/i><\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">says, <strong>credit must be given to whom and where it is due throughout your workforce.<\/strong> And, <strong>on the flipside, the leader must be the first to take the blame when something goes awry<\/strong>. In their words, when these two circumstances happen: \u201ca leader is born.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You probably already know this, but s<strong>etting clear goals is fundamental for any leader&#8217;s agenda<\/strong>. Write them down, but remember, as Deep Patel in a recent <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/deeppatel\/2017\/03\/22\/11-powerful-traits-of-successful-leaders\/#b1124ea469fc\"><b><i>Forbes<\/i><\/b><\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">article warns, achieving these objectives won\u2019t happen overnight. That\u2019s when the second part of what Angela Duckworth defines as <\/span><b>grit: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">persistence. <strong>It is fantastic if you feel passionate about something, but if you lack the follow-through, it is effectively useless<\/strong>. As <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/deeppatel\/2017\/03\/22\/11-powerful-traits-of-successful-leaders\/#b1124ea469fc\"><b>Patel<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> puts it, \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">[i]f you give up, so will everyone around you. To be a successful leader, you must be willing to keep going when others are tempted to throw in the towel.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4>Walk the walk<\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is just a figurative way of leading by example. As many of these clich\u00e9 sayings go, actions speak louder than words. If, as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ducttapemarketing.com\/7-traits-of-the-modern-leader\/\"><b>John Mantsch<\/b><\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">claims, people don\u2019t want to follow you based on the way you behave, that no longer suffices to get people to do what you would like them to do. <strong>No words are needed to exemplify leadership that will get more people in your organization to follow you<\/strong>. <\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4>Integrity<\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At the heart of integrity is truthfulness. As <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.briantracy.com\/blog\/leadership-success\/the-seven-leadership-qualities-of-great-leaders-strategic-planning\/\"><b>Brian Tracy<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8216;s infographic shows us, <strong>you need always to tell the truth to everybody in every situation<\/strong>. In an era where we see some of the most influential people in the world regularly not telling the truth, <strong>a lack of integrity does not make you many friends<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4>Thinking Ahead<\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At the heart of what we\u2019re going to cover in Innovation for Growth is what <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/deeppatel\/2017\/03\/22\/11-powerful-traits-of-successful-leaders\/#6f2045f1469f\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>Deep Patel<\/b><\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">calls <strong>acting strategically<\/strong>.
