Every country has its requirements for how public companies need to report this information.<strong> Using standards keeps the info the same for all parties<\/strong> (whether it be creditors, regulators, tax authorities in a respective country and, of course, the investors buying stocks on the open exchange) that need to look at that information.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the United States, public companies must report using a system called <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.investopedia.com\/terms\/f\/financialaccounting.asp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>GAAP<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (Generally Accepted Accounting Principles), while international public countries use IFRS (International Financial Reporting Standards). While you won&#8217;t carefully examine the difference between these standards in the course, this could account for differences you might see in how <a href=\"https:\/\/www.apple.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Apple<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0reports its numbers compared to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mercadona.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Mercadona<\/strong><\/a>. This is because <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ifrs.org\/use-around-the-world\/use-of-ifrs-standards-by-jurisdiction\/spain\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>Spanish public corporations are required to use IFRS standards<\/b><\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">while US public companies must file with the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) using GAAP standards, while <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lexology.com\/library\/detail.aspx?g=6d8b670d-8cd5-47c4-84c1-5bd6a8d33143\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>a new set of GAAP standards will come into effect at the beginning of 2018<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The last difference to look at is between <strong>accrual accounting and cash accounting<\/strong>. While cash accounting only reports transactions when real cash gets exchanged, accrual accounting has the accountants record a transaction when it happens, and both parties recognize that revenue comes in (even if it means that the cash won&#8217;t come until much later).
