Using AI to replace minimum-wage workers as the minimum wage is set to increase has been long anticipated.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><b>Recent advancements in automation in food services<\/b><\/h3>\n<p>There have been many remarkable advancements in the realm of AI and food services in the past year. Recently,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2017\/10\/06\/business\/robot-food-cost-jobs.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> <b>the New York Times did a profile on a salad-making robot <\/b><\/a>named \u201cSally\u201d and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.zdnet.com\/article\/zume-pizza-lands-48-million-in-funding-for-robotic-pizza-delivery\/\"><b>Zume Pizza<\/b><\/a>, a California based startup began automating en route pizza production and raised \u00a0$50 million in venture funding. In March 2018,<a href=\"https:\/\/thenextweb.com\/gadgets\/2018\/03\/14\/little-caesars-pizza-robot-patent\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b> Little Caesar\u2019s patented a robot<\/b><\/a> that allegedly makes \u201cthe perfect pepperoni pizza.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><b>The investment in self-driving vehicles<\/b><\/h3>\n<p>The early conversations on the subject of driverless cars were focused on automated taxis because eliminating the human driver from the equation seemed to be a clear route to optimize profitability. An ever-increasing number of companies\u2014automakers, tech giants, startups, courier services are <a href=\"https:\/\/mktoolboxsuite.com\/artificial-intelligence-ethics\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">investing in the technology to have autonomous delivery vehicles<\/a>. While it may seem like these are publicity stunts, the reality is these advancements are happening at an accelerated pace.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><b>Domino\u2019s as an industry leader<\/b><\/h3>\n<p>Last summer, <a href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/self-driven\/how-pizza-is-helping-us-design-our-self-driving-future-a78720818e99\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>Ford partnered with Domino\u2019s pizza<\/b><\/a> to experiment further with self-driving vehicles in Ann Arbor, Michigan. The driverless car would drive to the locations to deliver pizzas while a regular manually-driven car followed closely behind to videotape the process and its interactions with the recipients. Customers were required to approach the car and enter a code on a touchscreen on the vehicle to retrieve their pizza. Curiously enough, most people instinctively said \u201cthank you\u201d to the car upon taking their pizza. This collaborative experiment from Domino\u2019s and Ford taught researchers volumes about how automated delivery technology will be received by the public.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>In collaboration with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.starship.xyz\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>Starship Technologies<\/b><\/a>, Domino\u2019s Robotic Unit has launched a plan to implement small six-wheeled robots to deliver pizza to customers within a one-mile radius of their stores in Germany and Holland. The tiny robots look like coolers on wheels but contain the same technology used in the full-size self-driving cars. The delivery robots\u2019 small size and low velocity mean they will be less vulnerable to accidents and legal issues than full-size autonomous cars.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Domino\u2019s has rapidly become the industry leader for delivery services and its stock performance during the past 7 years has gone from $13 to over $200. Once these machines are standardized it will be a new world and many blue collar workers will be forced to seek different types of work.
