Carlo Ratti Talked About the Greening of Cities @ IE A&D on April 24

Today, new technologies allow us to bridge the eternal rift between city and nature – or urban and rural – in unprecedented ways. The Green & The Grey is a provocative title (originally used in an exhibition by Ratti) to talk about proposals and projects that have the ability to reconcile these two fundamental dimensions of the human condition, envisioning a thriving future for local communities worldwide.

When asked how his interest in nature and city came about, Carlo Ratti said:
"I have always been fascinated by the words of French anarchist geographer Elysée Reclus. At the end of the 19th century, Reclus wrote: ‘Man should have the doubled advantage of access to the pleasures of the city […], the opportunities offered for the study and practice of art, and at the same time should be able to enjoy the freedom that lies in nature, and which is explained in the field of its vast horizon.

By bringing together The Green & The Grey, Ratti continues to explore how, thanks to new technologies, we can finally contribute to Reclus’ vision of marrying city and nature.

IE A&D’s FabLab Attains Status as Member of MIT´s Global Network

IE School of Architecture and Design’s FabLab is now officially a member of the global Fab Labs network created by MIT, a worldwide platform that promotes access to tools and knowledge spanning more than 70 countries. In order to be part of this limited network, Fab Labs must meet established standards for equipment, as well as skills and training of the staff that manages the Lab.

“All accredited Fab Labs are equipped with similar resources, this means that from here, in Segovia, we can manufacture a project that has been developed in Kamakura (Japan), for example,” explains Elena Cardiel, Fab Lab IE University Manager.

IE Bachelor and Master in Architecture Accredited in Singapore

After an in-depth visit and review by the Singapore Architects' Board, the IE School of Architecture and Design has been granted accreditation of the Bachelor and Master degrees in Architecture.

In order to engage in independent professional practice around the world, architects require both academic and professional certification. This important accreditation will allow our students to more readily achieve licensure in Singapore, one of the worlds most dynamic economies.

Singapore has a particularly rigorous educational and professional system with only two schools of architecture. IE School of Architecture and Design is the first school in Spain to be awarded academic accreditation in Singapore.
Our graduates will now have the same privileges as graduates from the two Singaporean schools of Architecture: National University of Singapore and Singapore University of Technology and Design.

This important accreditation is the first in what we hope will be a series of similar as we actively pursue recognition of our professional degree in architecture around the world.

BuiltTech: A New Program for Executives Designed by IE A&D

According to recent studies by McKinsey and Dodge Data & Analytics, the AEC (Architecture, Engineering, and Construction) industry is essentially all-in and primed for a massive digital transformation. Just some of the trends include that AEC providers are organizing and hiring people with new skill sets such as data scientists, chief data officers, blockchain experts, and virtual design and construction experts.
Technology adoption in the field is growing with examples including massive increases in drones on job sites and the number of field personnel capturing data with mobile devices.

To understand these trends, ask the right questions and put in place the proper solutions, BuiltTech will meet all day for 8 consecutive Fridays from May 31 through July 19. The focus of the course is immensely practical and each participant can bring their own real-world challenges to be used as their “road map” for the course. This first edition will be imparted in Spanish.

Article by Director of the Bachelor in Architectural Studies, David Goodman, selected for publication

The respected US publication, Journal of Architectural Education, has selected the article titled, A Taxonomy for the Activist Environment: On Atmosphere and the Ad Hoc for inclusion in Volume 73, 2019.

The entire issue deals with diverse understandings and definitions of atmospheres in architecture.
David Goodman’s text contributes to this debate by using a taxonomic approach to propose strategies through which a socially engaged architecture might generate authored physical atmospheres, thus transcending the domain of authorless processes, actions, and ad hoc artifacts increasingly common today.

You can read the abstract and download David Goodman’s article on Taylor and Francis Online.
