Student's Corner. Tarek Al Dada: In Between the Layers

Tarek Al Dada, 5th-year student of the Bachelor in Architecture, was awarded 3rd prize at the first ever international research showcase competition celebrating innovative projects organized by the IEU Language Center on April 17th in Madrid.

The competition, called Three Minute Thesis (3MT) is a cross-disciplinary competition for IE’s undergraduate students presenting theses this year. During the competition, students from all undergraduate programs at IE presented a summary of their work in only three minutes.
Tarek's thesis project In Between the Layers is part of the Design Studio course, led by professors Fernando Rodríguez and Matan Mayer, in which the common theme was Architecture & Tourism using the city of Santiago de Compostela as the location for his proposal.

Tarek has shown an interest in how hotels have been redefined, emphasizing common spaces and becoming more social. To represent this, he created a new typology of hotel using architecture: the Homestel.
For this new typology of hotel, Tarek focused on concepts such as sustainability, achieved through the use of local materials; flexibility, by designing different modules that allow different rooms to be joined together; and social aspects, integrating abandoned buildings on the site of his project.

Master in Real Estate Development @ Germany

Our Master in Real Estate Development students recently enjoyed their third and final trip of the program to Germany.
They visited Hamburg and Berlin to see, first-hand, new developments, attend master classes by academics and professionals from development corporations and international funds. Germany was selected for the trip because it is the largest real estate investment location in Europe according to the Urban Land Institute (ULI) report, Emerging Trends in Real Estate.

Key sites visited in Hamburg included Hafen City, the largest urban redevelopment projects in Europe in terms of land mass, and the landmark Elbphilharmonie, by renowned architects Herzog and de Meuron.

In Berlin, they visited EUREF Campus, a symbol of sustainability and the energy revolution in Germany; Malzfabrik, an industrial site transformed for new ways of living and working; and the Berlin Mercedes-Benz Arena and East Side Mall, two buildings that are contributing to the redevelopment of an important area of the city.

Gender Equality in Architecture @ designMENA

During a trip to the Middle East, designMENA, one of the most relevant publications in the field of architecture of the region, interviewed Dean Martha Thorne on the issue of gender equality.

In this interview, Martha explained that even though women are entering architecture and design at increasing levels, the glass ceiling still exists and inequality is evident. There are varying reasons for this, and for improvement to occur many different steps are needed. Academics institutions can open doors to equality by encouraging women to apply for teaching positions, supporting women students through mentorships and inviting women to participate as guests lecturers among other measures.
