Inspiration for this project was taken from the process of shipbuilding—not a finished ship but a vessel under construction. The horizontal layering of vertical elements with small spans between them alludes to the way in which the structural ribs of a ship’s hull are laid out while its construction is underway.
By connecting the design to shipbuilding, “Harbour” emphasizes the significance of this activity to Birkenhead’s cultural heritage. The project celebrates the aesthetics of the process of construction rather than the end result. After all, it’s the history of shipbuilding that forms part of the community’s heritage, not the finished vessels themselves.
