Fusing legal knowledge and a firm legal foundation to impact policy

Rama came to IE University driven by the desire to make an impact—through the combination of law and public policy. Ever since her undergraduate studies, she has been certain that she wanted to go on to pursue an LL.M. in order to qualify as a lawyer in both the United Kingdom and Jordan. She was looking for the right program to help her achieve her goals.

Rama had earned her Bachelor of Laws at the University of Exeter in the United Kingdom. During that time she spent a year gaining practical experience in the industry, giving her valuable insights on Jordan’s legal landscape. Working in the corporate department of a renowned law firm in Amman, Rama specialized in drafting and editing contractual agreements, as well as researching and writing publications in areas like mergers and acquisitions law.

After completing her undergraduate degree in 2020, Rama decided to take a break from studying, spurred on by the uncertainty of the pandemic. That’s when she came across IE University’s Dual Degree programs. She soon realized she had discovered the ideal solution for combining her two-fold career objective into one expertly-designed, well-rounded program.

With her career path already mapped out, the Dual Degree Master in International Relations and Master of Laws (LL.M.) perfectly aligned with Rama’s short-term and long-term goals. While she wants to practice law in the immediate future, Rama’s ultimate goal is to pursue policy reform and politics. Through her studies and early career, she seeks to establish a firm legal foundation that will give her a legislative footing to create and amend government policy in a viable, effective way. She was delighted when she discovered that the Dual Degree would give her the opportunity to study both of these areas—so with her mind made up, she packed her bags for Madrid.

“IE University places such an important focus on employability and networking.”

Right away, Rama noticed that the teaching approach at IE University was very different from her previous experiences. She has been impressed by the way that program is structured to allow students to apply diverse skills and knowledge acquired in the classroom to the workplace itself. What’s more, it focuses on a broad array of skills that respond to the rapid growth of globalization and technology. Rama has also appreciated her professors’ abilities to combine theory and practice in their classroom methodologies. She was pleased to find that the faculty have richly diverse backgrounds, both personally and academically—just what she was looking for in a master’s program.

Throughout the 22 months of her dual degree program, Rama will earn her Master in International Relations and the Master of Laws (LL.M.), graduating with two master’s degrees in under two years. One of her favorite aspects of her IE University experience so far has been the size of the student body, which allows for an incredibly personal and immersive experience with both program management staff and professors. She also likes the way IE University places a central focus on employability and networking, ensuring that students can attend various workshops and events to diversify their skills. Some of the services that have particularly stood out to her are the one-on-one career planning meetings, cover letter writing, and LinkedIn workshops with experts at IE Talent & Careers.

During her remaining time at IE University, Rama plans to take full advantage of all of the opportunities available to her. In fact, she has already mapped out her next steps so that she can hit the ground running when she graduates. She hopes to join a multinational law firm in Jordan after finishing the program, where she’ll complete the requirements to qualify as a lawyer in her home country. However, Rama is keeping a career in politics firmly on the horizon, aspiring to draft and enact reform as a consultant or a lawmaker. Between her robust academic experience and relentless drive, we’re confident she will become just the sort of change-maker that the world needs.
