BIR
The Bachelor in International Relations is a four-year program taught in both Segovia and Madrid. Students have the option of beginning the degree in picturesque Segovia, spending two years before completing the final half of the program in Madrid. If you choose to begin your studies in Madrid, you will spend all four years in the lively capital city.
PROGRAM OVERVIEW
The program covers the fundamentals of International Relations, with a focus on global leadership. Students will acquire the skills needed to drive change in complex, cross-border economic, political, and social challenges. In the last years of the program, students will have the chance to choose an area to specialize in (through elective courses and internships), and develop a truly unique profile.
- Languages are Key: The students of the Bachelor in International Relations (BIR) will have the chance to learn up to two foreign languages as a part of their study plan. They will be able to take advantage of reduced class sizes and additional tutorial sessions.
- International Relations Unplugged: IR Unplugged is an exciting practical component of the program. Each term you will be immersed in current, real-life scenarios and projects with the aid of an IR expert.
- Beyond Class Experience: The Politics, Economics and Global Affairs School recognizes the importance of learning outside the classroom, and offers students the opportunity to enrol in advanced Seminars and joining Labs, to enhance the academic training with a practical application. More information on Seminars and Labs can be found here.
- A Flexible Specialization: senior students will build their expertise in a specific area of their choosing, obtaining an additional diploma on:
- Global Affairs and Diplomacy
- International Development
- Peace, Conflict and Security
- International and Social Business

During these four years, BIR students will obtain 240 credits, through core and mandatory courses first, and through elective and other academic activities (an Exchange semester, Internships, Labs, Advanced Seminars…). This program introduces practical courses (i.e., Entrepreneurship), and a bigger emphasis on Technology and Humanities courses. Our senior students will be able to choose from electives ranging from Sustainable Finance, Warfare in the Digital Age or Government Technologies, among others, mixing electives for a broad range of knowledge, or narrowing their elections to focus on one field of expertise.
The study program is meant to be flexible, so students can personalize their degree depending on their professional interests.
PARTNERSHIP WITH THE UNITED NATIONS SYSTEM STAFF COLLEGE
The Bachelor in International relations (BIR) at IE University is now in alliance with the United Nations System Staff College (UNSSC) to equip students with the right knowledge, hard and soft skills, and attitudes needed to make a difference on a global level.
To build transformative and sustainable change in today’s world, the BIR Program together with the UNSSC envisages a journey in four very concrete steps, distributed along our four academic years:
- 1st year: Global Citizenship, to make students aware of the challenges ahead in today’s world as well as the fundamentals of International Relations.
- 2nd year: Impact and Change, as students will acquire the analytical skills and knowledge required to evaluate and tackle the global transformational challenges.
- 3rd year: Leadership, including negotiation skills as well as advanced knowledge in International Relations.
- 4th year: Technology, innovation and sustainability. Students will be crosscutting elements of the programme throughout the four years.
