They had the <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ie.edu\/uncover-ie\/leadership-in-crisis-a-guide-to-high-stakes-decision-making\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Mad Men<\/a><\/em> lookalikes in the ad industry, the PR people to manage media and crisis, and the consultants to help them with their business needs. When the time came, the digital agencies came aboard to aid businesses to understand the new landscapes brought by the internet and social media.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, agencies started to expand their offerings, creating \u201cfull-service\u201d packs that covered nearly all the communication needs of a company. But in parallel, consulting groups started to create specialized units for firms\u2019 communication needs, and subsequently bought out some of the biggest names in the industry. Now we have to consider <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ie.edu\/uncover-ie\/practical-and-innovative-the-master-in-corporate-marketing-communication-according-to-an-expert\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">marketing<\/a> consulting firms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns right-image is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-28f84493 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"740\" height=\"480\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ie.edu\/uncover-ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/Agency-vs-consultancy-3.jpg\" alt=\"Agency vs. consulting firms and the future of marketing\" class=\"wp-image-27537\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.ie.edu\/uncover-ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/Agency-vs-consultancy-3.jpg 740w, https:\/\/www.ie.edu\/uncover-ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/Agency-vs-consultancy-3-300x195.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.ie.edu\/uncover-ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/Agency-vs-consultancy-3-150x97.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.ie.edu\/uncover-ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/Agency-vs-consultancy-3-585x379.jpg 585w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 740px) 100vw, 740px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-vertically-aligned-center is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-this-begs-the-question-are-agencies-still-relevant-or-are-marketing-consulting-firms-the-new-leaders-of-the-comms-industry\">This begs the question: are agencies still relevant, or are marketing consulting firms the new leaders of the comms industry?<\/h3>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>To say that the marketing landscape is changing is an understatement\u2014it\u2019s more like a revolution. And the thing about revolutions is, no one knows what will happen once it\u2019s over.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-the-rise-of-digital-marketing\">The rise of digital marketing<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The massification of the internet\u2014especially social media\u2014came as a disruptor to the traditional agency model. In just a few years, the budget that a company dedicated to traditional advertising mediums like television or newspaper, got replaced by online advertising targeted through e-mail or social media platforms like Facebook, Instagram, or YouTube.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The rapid expansion and rate of change brought on by this massification caught many agencies off guard. Suddenly, digital native agencies started to proliferate and provide services to companies that media agencies or advertising agencies did not consider to be their field.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With time, the line between analog and digital became non-existent, pushing the traditional agencies to reinvent themselves in order to catch up with these digital agencies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-agencies-vs-consultancies\">Agencies vs. consultancies<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The new players in the game are the consulting groups. Big names like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.accenture.com\/us-en\/about\/company-index\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Accenture<\/a> and Deloitte have acquired marketing agencies and developed units to provide their clients with services in the marketing and communications industry. While this has created a view that consulting groups are pushing marketing agencies out of business, for some this is caused more by changes in the way information is consumed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In an interview for AdExchange, Andy Mein, head of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.deloittedigital.com\/us\/en.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Deloitte Digital<\/a>, said:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe media business has essentially already been taken over by Facebook and Google, and they\u2019re the ones eating the agencies\u2019 lunch, not us. Agencies with a media-heavy bias to their business model are struggling to shed that as a main source of revenue, but they can\u2019t change quickly enough.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Traditionally, marketing agencies spoke to the Chief Marketing Officer and implemented the communication strategy, while consultants spoke with the CEO and devised the general strategy\u2014with marketing communications being the tail of it. In an effort to compete, <strong>agencies have started to develop consulting skills, creating \u201cconsulgencies.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One Spanish agency that has adopted this combination is Good Rebels. According to founder Juan Luis Polo:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe can no longer rely on award-winning campaigns\u2014we have to focus our efforts on new technologies and on strengthening our overall strategy. This is something that already comes easily to consulting firms with high technological capacity. Our secondary focus, that of experience and emotion-led marketing, is one that most agencies feel they already have a handle on and continue to boast about.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns left-image is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-28f84493 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-vertically-aligned-center is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-during-one-of-their-rebel-meetups-they-hosted-a-panel-debating-the-future-of-the-relationship-between-agencies-and-consulting-firms\">During one of their Rebel Meetups, they hosted a panel debating the future of the relationship between agencies and consulting firms.<\/h3>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"740\" height=\"480\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ie.edu\/uncover-ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/Agency-vs-consultancy-2.jpg\" alt=\"Agency vs. consulting firms and the future of marketing\" class=\"wp-image-27538\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.ie.edu\/uncover-ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/Agency-vs-consultancy-2.jpg 740w, https:\/\/www.ie.edu\/uncover-ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/Agency-vs-consultancy-2-300x195.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.ie.edu\/uncover-ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/Agency-vs-consultancy-2-150x97.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.ie.edu\/uncover-ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/Agency-vs-consultancy-2-585x379.jpg 585w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 740px) 100vw, 740px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Among the main touchpoints was the need for <a href=\"https:\/\/clutch.co\/us\/agencies\/digital-marketing\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">marketing agencies<\/a> to get more involved with the business aspect and not rely just on their creative strengths in order to talk more effectively with their clients. One key aspect in this is using data to measure the impact of the strategies implemented, as well as supporting clients in their need to understand the day-to-day of the industry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-the-future-of-marketing-consulting-firms-and-agencies\">The future of marketing: Consulting firms and agencies<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Those going into the marketing industry today must understand the need to be highly adaptable, as technological development will continue to disrupt the industry exponentially. According to Salesforce\u2019s 2018 \u201cState of Marketing,\u201d<strong> the average business uses 15 data sources to run their marketing program,<\/strong> and <strong>by 2025, this could go up to 45 data sources. <\/strong>This opens up the possibilities for artificial intelligence to be implemented as a way to sort and interpret this data.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Despite their muscle, artificial intelligence could prove a risk to consultancies. According to AgencyAgile CEO Jack Skeels:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe future looks like flexible workforces, a talent-driven <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ie.edu\/uncover-ie\/what-could-your-future-in-economics-look-like\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">economy<\/a>, and a decline in mundane and repetitive knowledge-work roles that can be automated away by AI and other technologies. The consultancies, which have prospered from their excellent knowledge management technologies, will see those technologies be the platform from which Watson-like AIs replace the legions of consultants.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Another incoming change is the shift from the Chief Marketing Officer role to Chief Experience Officer. According to Skeels, this function will focus on \u201chow best to spend money&nbsp;<em>across the enterprise&nbsp;<\/em>in order to create higher Customer ROI.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Indeed, the future seems to be shaped by customer centricity, with brands focusing on delivering the best experience possible to their customers. This requires the use of technology to connect with them across their whole journey with the brand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The disruption across the marketing industry can create chaos for all the players involved, such as brands, agencies, consulting firms, and customers. However, it is this chaos that represents opportunity. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns right-image is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-28f84493 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"740\" height=\"480\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ie.edu\/uncover-ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/Agency-vs-consultancy-4.jpg\" alt=\"Marketing consulting firms\" class=\"wp-image-27539\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.ie.edu\/uncover-ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/Agency-vs-consultancy-4.jpg 740w, https:\/\/www.ie.edu\/uncover-ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/Agency-vs-consultancy-4-300x195.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.ie.edu\/uncover-ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/Agency-vs-consultancy-4-150x97.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.ie.edu\/uncover-ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/Agency-vs-consultancy-4-585x379.jpg 585w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 740px) 100vw, 740px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-vertically-aligned-center is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-those-who-are-able-to-better-merge-creativity-with-intelligence-to-deliver-measurable-results-are-going-to-win-the-heart-and-wallet-of-their-clients\">Those who are able to better <strong>merge creativity with intelligence to deliver measurable results are going to win the heart and wallet of their clients.<\/strong><\/h3>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>One thing, however, remains a constant through the history of marketing: it\u2019s all about relationships.
