{"id":28177,"date":"2021-11-10T09:52:19","date_gmt":"2021-11-10T09:52:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ie.edu\/uncover-ie\/?p=28177"},"modified":"2026-04-03T13:19:22","modified_gmt":"2026-04-03T11:19:22","slug":"the-dynamic-field-of-international-dispute-resolution-a-look-at-the-master-of-laws-with-melanie-riofrio-piche","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ie.edu\/uncover-ie\/the-dynamic-field-of-international-dispute-resolution-a-look-at-the-master-of-laws-with-melanie-riofrio-piche\/","title":{"rendered":"The dynamic field of International Dispute Resolution: a look at the Master of Laws with M\u00e9lanie Riofrio Pich\u00e9"},"content":{"rendered":"<span class=\"span-reading-time rt-reading-time\" style=\"display: block;\"><span class=\"rt-label rt-prefix\"><\/span> <span class=\"rt-time\"> 3<\/span> <span class=\"rt-label rt-postfix\">min read<\/span><\/span>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">M\u00e9lanie Riofrio Pich\u00e9 is the Secretary General of the Madrid International Arbitration Center (MIAC), and we are privileged to count her among our professors and mentors at IE Law School, where she teaches classes in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ie.edu\/law-school\/programs\/masters\/master-of-laws-llm\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Master of Laws (LL.M.)<\/a> specialization in International Dispute Resolution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Fluent in English, Spanish and French, and possessing an international background herself, M\u00e9lanie has always sought to delve into the core of international dispute resolution\u2014from the very beginning of her professional career doing legal internships in Paris and The Hague, to her sector-leading position at the MIAC today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhat I would like to pass on to my mentees is a fire in the belly\u2014this deep-seated personal drive and ambition to accomplish and achieve their goals,\u201d says M\u00e9lanie.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That drive is something she undoubtedly possesses herself. M\u00e9lanie has held various roles throughout her career, both as a practicing arbitrator and as a professor of arbitration at the university level. We had the chance to interview her about the need for international dispute resolution in today\u2019s world and to ask her advice for those just entering the field.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe title=\"Interview with IE Professor | M\u00e9lanie Riofrio | Master of Laws (LL.M.)\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/SWApcl2enfs?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A new and expanding sector<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI think we are witnessing a \u2018professionalization\u2019 of international arbitrators,\u201d says M\u00e9lanie.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She tells us that, in the past, \u201cbeing an \u2018arbitrator\u2019 was an occupation that was combined with other legal activities, such as being a lawyer, a university professor, or even an engineer or an accountant.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But, as the world becomes increasingly globalized, this is no longer the case. \u201cThe arbitral profession has changed considerably in the last few years. The increase in the number of arbitrators and arbitration boutiques is a strong signal of how arbitrators are approaching this role in a more full-time capacity.\u201d And the Master of Laws with a specialization in International Dispute Resolution <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ie.edu\/uncover-ie\/the-master-of-laws-ll-m-a-golden-ticket-to-your-international-career\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">prepares future professionals to flourish<\/a> in this ever-developing field.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a><\/a>Why International Dispute Resolution?<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Madrid is home to some of the industries that are most prone to disputes\u2014construction, energy, infrastructure, communications and finance\u2014and as globalization expands, many of these disputes involve multiple jurisdictions in various countries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cDisputes will inevitably arise from those commercial relationships. This is why there is an increasing need for professionals who are prepared to resolve these disputes in a time- and cost-efficient manner.\u201d M\u00e9lanie points out that today\u2019s world needs arbitrators who are adequately prepared with a cross-border perspective, \u201cbut most of all, professionals that understand the importance of preserving those business relationships.\u201d<strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a><\/a>Advice for aspiring international arbitrators<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI think a successful career is based on hard work, resilience and perseverance. There is not a single path to accomplish our goals,\u201d says M\u00e9lanie. \u201cWe will make mistakes. We will have to learn and capitalize on past experiences.\u201d<strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As for tips for those about to embark on their professional journey, she highlights two important skills.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe first is a good business sense. You can\u2019t make sound decisions if you don\u2019t understand international business and how it works.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe second is the mastery of the art of persuasion. The parties have to persuade the arbitrator, but the arbitrator also has to convince the parties that his or her decision is reasonable.
