How to become a lawyer in Spain: What is “homologation”?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

When you homologate your degree earned in a country outside of Spain, you are getting your university degree officially approved by the Spanish authorities, in this case the Ministry of Universities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For master\u2019s degrees that will qualify you to practice law in Spain, you will need to fully homologate your bachelor\u2019s degree<\/strong>. You can do this through the Spanish Ministry of Universities. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Let\u2019s say, for example, that you\u2019re interested in studying our Double Master in Lawyering<\/a> here in Madrid. Since law is a regulated profession in Spain, you\u2019ll need to get your bachelor\u2019s degree homologated in order to access the program.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How do I get my law degree officially recognized?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

In order to get your university degree homologado<\/em>, there are quite a few steps to follow. But fear not! We’ve laid them out for you step by step in case you want to become a lawyer in Spain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Gather your documents to become a lawyer: Spain requirements<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

To your law degree officially recognized, you\u2019ll need:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

– An official ID<\/p>\n\n\n\n

– Your official law degree certificate<\/p>\n\n\n\n

– Your official academic transcript with details of study. It should include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The duration of your degree program, in academic years<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Courses studied and total weighting of each subject, expressed in either hours or ECTS credits<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n

– Completed Modelo 790 (with Tasa 107 paid)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

– Completed application form<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n

– Evidence of sufficient linguistic competency in Spanish<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/a>Legalize your documents<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

If you are homologating a law degree that is not<\/strong> from (or recognized by) a country within the EU, the European Economic Area or Switzerland, you will need to legalize your documents. Depending on the eligibility of the country you earned your degree in, you\u2019ll either need to legalize your degree documents by acquiring the Hague Apostille stamp\u2014which is the standard route for many countries<\/a> around the world\u2014or otherwise through defined diplomatic channels. You\u2019ll be able to find out which by checking on the official government website of the country that issued or recognized your degree.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/a>Get your documents officially translated<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Any documents that are not already in Spanish will need to be translated\u2014your degree certificate, transcripts, and birth certificate if necessary. Unfortunately for the multilinguals out there, you can\u2019t just translate your university transcripts yourself. Be sure to get a \u201csworn translation\u201d from a translator registered in Spain. If your translator doesn\u2019t have this special certification, the authorities may reject your translated documents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/a>Pay the administrative fees<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

In order to process your paperwork, you need to pay a specific fee (Tasa 107 – Modelo 790<\/a>). You can do this in-person by taking the fee (\u20ac166.50) in cash<\/strong> along with the completed modelo<\/em> to most banks in Spain. Here, they will process your payment and stamp your form. Alternatively, you can send the payment from abroad, using the bank information listed here<\/a> under \u2018Pago en el extranjero\u2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Submit your paperwork to the Spanish Ministry of Education<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

If you\u2019re currently located in Spain, you can simply go to any public registry<\/a> and submit your paperwork from there. Be sure to bring both originals and photocopies of your certified documents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bureaucratic processes can take time, so don\u2019t get too worried if you don\u2019t hear anything for a while. Once a decision has been made, you\u2019ll receive a resolution either by mail or via an online status update attached to your case number.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
