While they represent around <a href=\"https:\/\/www.deloitte.com\/us\/en\/insights\/industry\/financial-services\/women-leaders-financial-services.html\" type=\"link\" id=\"https:\/\/www.deloitte.com\/us\/en\/insights\/industry\/financial-services\/women-leaders-financial-services.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">52%<\/a> of entry-level employees in financial services, they occupy only <a href=\"https:\/\/www.deloitte.com\/us\/en\/insights\/industry\/financial-services\/women-leaders-financial-services.html\" type=\"link\" id=\"https:\/\/www.deloitte.com\/us\/en\/insights\/industry\/financial-services\/women-leaders-financial-services.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">18%<\/a> of C-suite roles. But this can improve.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As we&#8217;ll explore in this article, statistics show it\u2019s possible for women to enter the world of finance, but challenges remain for meaningful career progression. Yet women remain underrepresented in private markets. Recent research shows they account for around <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/sustainability\/boards-policy-regulation\/no-progress-senior-women-hedge-funds-private-equity-says-fox-partners-report-2026-03-06\/\" type=\"link\" id=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/sustainability\/boards-policy-regulation\/no-progress-senior-women-hedge-funds-private-equity-says-fox-partners-report-2026-03-06\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">15%<\/a> of partners in hedge funds and private equity firms. Why?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The problem is cultural. More men study finance than women &#8211; but there&#8217;s an even bigger discrepancy in faculty. The <a href=\"https:\/\/afajof.org\/\" type=\"link\" id=\"https:\/\/afajof.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">American Finance Association<\/a> estimates around 20% female representation among finance faculty globally. That bleeds into the culture of the finance industry. Women in financial services still report <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mckinsey.com\/capabilities\/people-and-organizational-performance\/our-insights\/women-in-the-workplace\" type=\"link\" id=\"https:\/\/www.mckinsey.com\/capabilities\/people-and-organizational-performance\/our-insights\/women-in-the-workplace\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">higher levels of burnout and slower promotion rates<\/a> compared with men. So, what&#8217;s the way forward?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-how-do-women-in-the-finance-industry-make-teams-stronger\">How do women in the finance industry make teams stronger?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>We need to publicize the statistical benefit of having female leaders. An <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hec.edu\/en\/knowledge\/instants\/why-private-equity-firms-should-include-more-women\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">article from HEC Paris<\/a> showed private equity teams with at least one woman will outperform all-male teams. So if the studies show women&#8217;s leadership in finance boosts results, we need to make that known. This in turn changes narratives that influence female promotion to executive positions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns left-image is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-28f84493 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-vertically-aligned-center is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"we-re-proud-of-our-dynamic-program-alumni-who-have-landed-roles-that-earn-them-an-average-annual-salary-of-37-209\">Startups founded or co-founded by women generated <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bcg.com\/publications\/2018\/why-women-owned-startups-are-better-bet\" type=\"link\" id=\"https:\/\/www.bcg.com\/publications\/2018\/why-women-owned-startups-are-better-bet\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">78 cents<\/a> in revenue for every dollar invested, compared with 31 cents for male-founded startups.<\/h3>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"740\" height=\"493\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ie.edu\/uncover-ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/women-in-finance-are-chipping-away-at-the-glass-ceiling1.jpg\" alt=\"Women in finance are chipping away at the glass ceiling\" class=\"wp-image-29084\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.ie.edu\/uncover-ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/women-in-finance-are-chipping-away-at-the-glass-ceiling1.jpg 740w, https:\/\/www.ie.edu\/uncover-ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/women-in-finance-are-chipping-away-at-the-glass-ceiling1-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.ie.edu\/uncover-ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/women-in-finance-are-chipping-away-at-the-glass-ceiling1-150x100.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.ie.edu\/uncover-ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/women-in-finance-are-chipping-away-at-the-glass-ceiling1-585x390.jpg 585w, https:\/\/www.ie.edu\/uncover-ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/women-in-finance-are-chipping-away-at-the-glass-ceiling1-263x175.jpg 263w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 740px) 100vw, 740px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>What&#8217;s more, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mckinsey.com\/~\/media\/mckinsey\/featured%20insights\/diversity%20and%20inclusion\/diversity%20wins%20how%20inclusion%20matters\/diversity-wins-how-inclusion-matters-vf.pdf\" type=\"link\" id=\"https:\/\/www.mckinsey.com\/~\/media\/mckinsey\/featured%20insights\/diversity%20and%20inclusion\/diversity%20wins%20how%20inclusion%20matters\/diversity-wins-how-inclusion-matters-vf.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">McKinsey &amp; Company<\/a> report that companies in the top quartile for gender diversity are about 27% more likely to outperform financially. The conclusion? Gender diversity in finance isn&#8217;t just a moral benefit &#8211; it&#8217;s an economic one, too. Meaning finance and industry could seriously benefit from change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And the statistics prove that representation will continue to improve. Women are expected to control <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mckinsey.com\/industries\/financial-services\/our-insights\/the-new-face-of-wealth-the-rise-of-the-female-investor\" type=\"link\" id=\"https:\/\/www.mckinsey.com\/industries\/financial-services\/our-insights\/the-new-face-of-wealth-the-rise-of-the-female-investor\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">$60 trillion<\/a> in global wealth by 2030, reshaping the financial industry. So it&#8217;s best to be ahead of the trend.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-how-are-we-nurturing-women-s-leadership-at-ie-university\">How are we nurturing women&#8217;s leadership at IE University?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>At <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ie.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">IE University<\/a>, we&#8217;re dedicated to making lasting change in finance.
