A defining opportunity for Ingka Investments and IE School of Architecture & Design<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

In 2022, following Ingka Investments\u2019 acquisition of a building on Oxford Circus previously owned by Topshop, IE School of Architecture & Design collaborated on a challenge inviting participants from around the world to develop proposals for the site. The brief asked participants to rethink how the property could be used by Ingka Group while responding to the evolving role of retail in cities. Proposals explored how sustainability, consumer behavior and emerging technologies could shape the future of this prominent location in the City of Westminster, London.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The top submissions were evaluated by a jury of industry professionals from Ingka Group, and the top three applicants were awarded support toward pursuing the Global Master in Real Estate Development<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Omar Alenezi<\/a> won first prize. At the time, he was a project manager at Total Management Consultancy (Kuwait) with over 18 years of experience in real estate as well as project and business development. Omar held<\/strong> a Master of Business Administration from Kuwait Maastricht Business School and a Bachelor of Architecture from the University of Kuwait. As part of this recognition, Omar also had the opportunity to present his proposal to international stakeholders from Ingka Group and other leading voices in the sector.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Omar\u2019s vision<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Given the aim of that year\u2019s Real Estate Challenge to explore the new role of retail within urban spaces, Omar\u2019s vision for the Oxford Circus location was based on using the space to build a more innovative and sustainable future community. His proposal was informed by a number of factors impacting the retail industry, particularly the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on consumer behavior. For his recommendations, he considered the relationship between real estate, investment, technology and retail, as well as the future of the real estate market as shaped by these concepts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Omar was especially concerned with the sustainability of his proposal and identified a reduction in carbon emissions\u2014particularly during construction\u2014as a key component. He also incorporated actions for the Ingka Group\u2019s building to achieve net-zero emissions and contribute to a more sustainable, inclusive and vibrant community overall, including through collaborations with other private sector entities and the government.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Omar was excited about the opportunity to share his proposal directly with the decision-makers of this multinational organization. Although the expansion managers represented different regions of the world and each worked to address the needs of their respective markets, Omar noted that the acceptance of his proposal was proof that the world speaks one language when it comes to data, knowledge and innovation applied to urban regeneration. As a student in Madrid, Omar described his experience as challenging but amazing, taking full advantage of the resources of the Global Master in Real Estate Development program to maximize both his professional and personal growth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
