Ranging from crisis management in Wall Street to quelling a riot with a soft drink, we\u2019re going to ensure the next time you\u2019ve got to make a big decision, you have great examples to follow\u2026 or avoid.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Why is leadership in crisis important for businesses?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Leadership in crisis times is important. Why? Because it provides stability, direction and reassurance. Effective leaders provide a backbone when the rest of an organization can turn to jello. That means making tough decisions quickly and ensuring chaos doesn’t take hold. Crisis involves shock\u2014good leadership gives resilience to the organization that overcomes rapidly changing circumstances.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Good leaders<\/a> stay honest about what they know, admit what they don\u2019t, and act on the best data available.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But decision-making isn’t just cold facts; it\u2019s about people. The great leaders<\/a> \u201cgo first,\u201d setting an example through sacrifice and action to build trust and stability. They stay human, managing their own emotions and using flexible messaging to keep everyone grounded. By blending expertise, evidence, and empathy, they can steer through chaos, earning the trust that helps everyone weather the storm\u2014and even come out stronger.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Don Draper in Mad Men: Recontextualizing the crisis<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Lucky Strike decide to leave \u201cSCDP\u201d for another ad agency. The company of our protagonist-creative-director Don Draper, SCDP simply can\u2019t survive without Lucky Strike<\/a> in its portfolio. Soon enough, other clients jump ship and possible leads avoid SCDP like the plague. It\u2019s a high-profile business breakup with apocalyptic impacts for our beloved cast of characters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Salvation lies in a turn of phrase oft repeated: \u201cIf you don\u2019t like what\u2019s being said, change the conversation.\u201d Draper publishes an open letter in The New York Times<\/a>. It\u2019s pure spin; instead of a rejection from the client, Draper frames the breakup as his own ethical decision. Controversial, but his recontextualization of the crisis saves the day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s not all fiction, either. There was a real ad exec who authored a similar letter as published in the Times\u2019 archive<\/a>. However, the ex-chairman of McCann-Erickson<\/a> was far more virtuous. A reformed chain-smoker, Emerson Foote, did ultimately leave the ad industry to avoid promoting cigarette addiction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Michael Burry: Preparing for leadership in crisis<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Michael Burry came out the right side of the biggest financial crisis of this century. As popularized in \u201cThe Big Short<\/a>\u201d, Burry famously bet against the housing market before its collapse in 2007-2008. His insights on subprime mortgage loans made to borrowers with poor credit histories meant that his fund, Scion Capital, won its investors many millions in profits. But it wasn\u2019t so simple.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cBack in 2005 and 2006,\u201d Burry<\/a> said on his famous episode of leadership in crisis. \u201cI argued as forcefully as I could, in letters to clients of my investment firm, Scion Capital<\/a>, that the mortgage market would melt down in the second half of 2007, causing substantial damage to the economy.\u201d Despite skepticism, Burry\u2019s dogged belief in the data paid off.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Glengarry Glen Ross: Shifting the blame<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

In David Mamet\u2019s play-turned-screenplay shows a quartet of real estate salesmen in crisis\u2014and it all owes to pressure from management. \u201cFirst prize [for making sales],\u201d Alec Baldwin\u2019s Blake explains, \u201cis a Cadillac Eldorado. Anybody wanna see second prize? Second prize is a set of steak knives. Third prize is you\u2019re fired.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Desperation turns the businessmen haywire as they struggle to come out on top\u2014two actually selling leads to a competitor. Regardless of the pressure from above, the managers in \u201cGlengarry Glen Ross\u201d handle leadership in crisis by creating a culture of betrayal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The moral is clear: competition is inevitable in business, but pitting employees against one another is a miserable, costly, and often ineffective form of motivation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kendall Jenner: Knowing the value of an ice-cold beverage<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Picture this: a line of law enforcement gathers before protestors. One side wants love, the other wants order. Now imagine you\u2019re Kendall Jenner\u2014blonde wig donned, lips smokey red. But something\u2019s missing. Called to action by an ethnically ambiguous cellist, you tear away from an important photoshoot and run to the protest\u2019s frontier. Crisis is afoot. The solution? A can of ice-cold Pepsi.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Of course, I\u2019m joking\u2014Pepsi\u2019s ill-advised campaign drew off the real-world crises of Black anti-police-violence protests<\/a>  to sell a sweet beverage. Its public reception was far from positive. Remember\u2014if things are tense, don\u2019t poke the dragon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pepsi in turn handled this PR crisis with a swift apology<\/a>: \u201cPepsi was trying to project a global message of unity, peace and understanding. Clearly we missed the mark and we apologize. We did not intend to make light of any serious issue.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
