The future of work is digital\u2014and this year alone has seen us take great leaps to a total transformation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Let&#8217;s discuss remote work trends, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ie.edu\/uncover-ie\/artificial-consciousness-ie-school-of-science-and-technology\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">emergence of AI<\/a>, and the future of work in a digital economy\u2014with a focus on why public policy will need to adapt to change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-are-the-emerging-trends-in-remote-work\">What are the emerging trends in remote work?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Remote and hybrid work models are the most obvious shift. Since the pandemic, global workforce transformation has seen a digital shift across industries. In 2024, four years after, remote workers in the US check in at around <a href=\"https:\/\/neat.no\/resources\/top-remote-work-statistics\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">14%<\/a>. As such, some <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kcl.ac.uk\/news\/uk-workers-increasingly-rejecting-return-to-office-mandates-study-finds#:~:text=Workers%20increasingly%20willing%20to%20quit,this%20had%20risen%20to%2053%25.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">75%<\/a> of business leaders reported resistance from employees to post-pandemic office returns. Leadership styles are changing as a result, with a focus on \u201cgreen flag\u201d managers who value outcome over presence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-is-the-rate-of-remote-working-in-2025\">What is the rate of remote working in 2025?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The current state of affairs bodes well for hybrid workers. This year in the US, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ie.edu\/uncover-ie\/the-pros-and-cons-of-work-from-home-careers-in-the-digital-age\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">remote jobs<\/a> accounted for more than <a href=\"https:\/\/www.strongdm.com\/blog\/remote-work-statistics\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">15%<\/a> of total opportunities. But, in truth, is working from home more productive?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It depends on how and where it&#8217;s implemented. Studies show that remote and hybrid work can boost productivity by <a href=\"https:\/\/news.stanford.edu\/stories\/2024\/06\/hybrid-work-is-a-win-win-win-for-companies-workers#:~:text=In%20the%20largest%20study%20yet,both%20employees%20and%20their%20bosses.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">13%<\/a>. Employees often report fewer distractions, better focus and time savings from commuting. Automation and its impact on employment shouldn&#8217;t be understated, since companies and employees can lighten their load from repetitive, data-intensive tasks. So the future of work will focus more on creative, interpersonal and strategic responsibilities. \u201cWhat I think <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ie.edu\/uncover-ie\/ai-in-business\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">AI<\/a> is most valuable for is supplementing human judgment, particularly in instances when the stakes are high, but there are not clear-cut answers,\u201d said David Autor, an MIT economist, in a recent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mccormick.northwestern.edu\/news\/articles\/2025\/03\/what-ai-means-for-the-future-of-work\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">panel discussion<\/a> hosted by Northwestern University.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At the same panel, Eric Horvitz, chief scientific officer at Microsoft, said we\u2019ve \u201cbarely scratched the surface on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ie.edu\/uncover-ie\/has-ai-passed-the-turing-test-science-technology\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">human-AI collaborative possibilities<\/a>.\u201d Automation and employment don&#8217;t necessarily need to be at odds with one another; there may be forms of work that preserve human agency and can be assisted by AI. Autor echoed this perspective, warning against a &#8220;failure of imagination&#8221; in thinking about the future of work. This shift challenges traditional governance frameworks, as work becomes less place-bound and more decentralized across borders and time zones.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Naturally, the digital economy enables more access to global talent and enhanced productivity. But it also raises questions about data governance, cybersecurity, equitable access to digital infrastructure and the need to future-proof the workforce through reskilling and lifelong learning.
