\u201cI wanted to go into the tech sector, and the competition is huge, so I had to understand what recruiters value and what makes a candidate stand out,\u201d says Dinis Leal<\/a> as he reflects on his time at IE Business School<\/a>. Within weeks of graduating, Dinis landed his dream job as Account Strategist at Google. So clearly something stuck.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How to get a job consulting at Google?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Dinis, who’s logged into our call from Dublin, says the process began during his studies. \u201cI applied in March, and after a couple of months I got the first interview,\u201d says Dinis. \u201cThey asked a lot of situational questions. That\u2019s where I really used what I\u2019d learned at IE\u2014we covered the SMART framework<\/a> for answering questions. You give the situation, link it to your experience, explain your thought process, describe the impact and finish with what you learned. I used that in every interview.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Far from restricting him, IE’s framework for good interviewing proved bulletproof. \u201cIt\u2019s about being structured, but also human,” says Dinis. “Once I started thinking like that, the conversation just flowed.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“I could give real examples and show how I work under pressure. And that\u2019s what made me stand out.”<\/h3>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Dinis took full advantage of the job-hunting workshops on offer to students of the Master in Digital Marketing<\/a>. That means sessions on building your CV, interview workshops and networking events with top recruiters: \u201cI went to every career session IE had. I learned how to structure my CV, how to approach interviews, how to make people understand my value,\u201d he explains. \u201cIt helped me understand what the other person on the call is actually looking for.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What does Dinis do in his role at Google?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Dinis manages a portfolio of clients across Europe as part of Google\u2019s advertising division. \u201cI\u2019m an account strategist,\u201d Dinis explains. \u201cMy job is to help clients grow. They\u2019re already investing in Google Ads. My role is to understand their business, identify opportunities and scale their results.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And Dinis emphasizes that the key to consulting at Google is measurement. \u201cAnalytics is the base of everything. If you have failures in measurement, it\u2019s impossible to build a good strategy<\/a>,\u201d he says. “Each client begins with a review of their data setup\u2014tracking tags, KPIs and conversion points\u2014before Google Ads\u2019 machine learning takes over. The algorithm learns from the data and optimizes automatically. But it all starts with solid measurement.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

His work combines technical analysis with creative storytelling. \u201cCreativity<\/a> plays a huge part,\u201d Dinis explains. \u201cPeople react to ads that are clear, visual and have a real value proposition. It\u2019s not just selling something\u2014it\u2019s communicating why you\u2019re different. That\u2019s where you connect.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How did the Master in Digital Marketing prepare Dinis for his role?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Dinis had worked in communication at Nautilus before undertaking the master’s program. All great experience, but he wanted to understand strategy on a deeper level. \u201cI had no real knowledge about digital marketing<\/a>,\u201d Dinis says. \u201cThat\u2019s what drove me to IE. I wanted to learn how businesses strengthen their brand and online presence.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fortunately for Dinis, the Master in Digital Marketing<\/a> delivered. \u201cWe had courses on Salesforce, Google Ads, corporate communication, even economics,” says Dinis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt gave me the technical knowledge, but also the mindset. IE didn\u2019t just teach me skills; it changed how I think about business.\u201d<\/h3>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIE literally put me on the map,\u201d Dinis continues. \u201cI went to every networking event, met people from all over the world, and even connected with people who later helped me in Dublin. That\u2019s how the master works\u2014you get out what you put in.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How to make the most of your time at IE Business School?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

For Dinis, success has come through a mix of preparation, initiative and continuous learning. \u201cIE gave me every single thing I needed\u2014and even things I didn\u2019t know I needed,\u201d he says. \u201cBut it\u2019s up to you to take the initiative. The professors, the events, the tools\u2014they\u2019re all there. You just have to use them.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That mindset carries into his daily work. \u201cGoogle changes every day, especially with AI<\/a>,\u201d he says. \u201cBut what stays constant is curiosity. You have to keep asking: Who is my audience? What do they need? How can I make this better?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

His advice to future students is simple: \u201cBe proactive. Don\u2019t wait for opportunities\u2014create them. IE gives you the platform, but you build the story.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
