You don\u2019t need to be born into tech to belong here. Marta de Zavala wasn\u2019t. She studied business in Madrid, built her own company in Dubai, and now leads cybersecurity<\/a> for IE School of Science & Technology<\/a>. Every step came from one decision: to move forward even when it didn\u2019t feel certain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Today, Marta teaches professionals how to navigate the digital frontier. And while she makes it sound simple, there’s been a robust method to her success.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What happens when you step outside your comfort zone?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Marta\u2019s story starts like many others\u2014with a business degree and a sense that something was missing. \u201cI wanted to have an international profile,\u201d says Marta. \u201cI went to Amman with the European Commission\u2026 to a refugee camp. And that was the turning point.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That experience sparked the idea of writing a final undergraduate dissertation on microfinance and blockchain<\/a> for the inclusion of refugees in the Middle East. \u201cThat research changed everything,\u201d says Marta. \u201cIt opened my eyes to how technology can solve real human problems.\u201d Soon after, Marta joined Dell Technologies to work in tech sales. \u201cThat\u2019s where I really entered the STEM world,\u201d says Marta. \u201cI came from business, but I realized I wanted to stay in technology.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Before long, Marta decided a master’s would be necessary to keep progressing in the field. <\/h3>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt was tough financially\u2014I don’t come from wealth. I wondered, do I buy a house or study a master\u2019s? It was my life savings from working in sales,\u201d says Marta. Fortunately, IE School of Science & Technology scouted Marta at an open day and offered her a grant. \u201cThat really moved the needle for me.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Why does cybersecurity need women?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Having cut her teeth as a tech consultant at EY<\/a> and Alvarez & Marsal<\/a>, Marta used her connections working with major financial institutions and government clients across Spain and Saudi Arabia to launch her own cybersecurity venture in Dubai. \u201cI noticed a need in the market for cybersecurity firms that could adapt to mid-size entities, not just the big players,\u201d says Marta. \u201cSo I started Cysuite Group. We now have clients in the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Europe, Portugal, the UK, and partnerships in South America.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That sense of readiness defines how she works. \u201cWe don\u2019t only look at systems and networks,\u201d she says. \u201cWe look for what\u2019s available online, breaches of confidentiality, oversharing\u2026 and we align cybersecurity with company strategy so it doesn\u2019t become a roadblock.\u201d But she\u2019s quick to point out that technology isn\u2019t the only vulnerability. \u201cMore than 80% of successful cyberattacks come from the human factor,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cPeople aren\u2019t trained to identify threats. The same way your manners get formed at home, cybersecurity awareness should come from home.\u201d<\/h3>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

\u201cCEOs are starting to understand the importance of cybersecurity,\u201d says Marta. \u201cThey need translators who can connect the technical and business worlds. It\u2019s not just for coders. Graduates [with knowledge in cybersecurity] might go into compliance, anti-money laundering, counter-terrorism, communications, or crisis management. There’s a lot of opportunity.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What does it take to build your own path?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThere are stereotypes,\u201d says Marta. \u201cI’m not going to say there’s nothing to worry about as a woman\u2026 especially in a sector like Cybersecurity.\u201d But Marta shrugs it off. \u201cI was lucky. I worked with clients in the GCC<\/a> that were visionary and innovative and didn\u2019t consider the fact I was a woman when deciding to give me a chance or believe in my talent.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Marta’s rules for success are practical. \u201cOne is financial planning\u2014it allowed me to make decisions out of willingness, not need. The second is networking. You need to go out and find your own luck. This position in IE, launching my firm, selling\u2014that\u2019s been networking.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

And now, looking back, Marta understands how much education has shaped her vision.<\/h3>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI have so much to give back to IE,” says Marta. “I’m here today as a business owner thanks to that decision of not buying a house. To study a master’s instead. Life is a mix of decisions. When you look back, you connect the dots.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n
