For three students\u2014Natalia Vel\u00e1zquez<\/a> from Colombia, Liam Velani<\/a> from the UK, and Emanuele Ghidoni<\/a> from Italy\u2014internships with IE Business School have taken them to the other side of the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

From June to December, the trio are living and working in southern India as part of the Infosys Instep<\/a> program\u2014an international internship initiative that welcomes over 100 students each year from leading institutions such as MIT, Yale, Bocconi and Kellogg. Supported by the IE Talent & Careers<\/a> team, they\u2019re turning theory into practice across AI, strategy, and innovation projects while immersing themselves in a culture that\u2019s shaping the digital future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Natalia Vel\u00e1zquez: \u201cGrowth usually comes from discomfort\u201d<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

For Natalia Vel\u00e1zquez<\/a>, an International MBA<\/a> student from Colombia, the move from retail to tech wasn\u2019t just a career pivot\u2014it was a leap toward reinvention. \u201cI\u2019d never worked in tech before, and with everything happening around AI right now, I felt like this was the perfect moment to jump in,\u201d she says. \u201cInfosys is one of the biggest tech companies in the world, so being here felt like a great opportunity to explore the space and get a feel for the future of work.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Through IE, she discovered the Infosys Instep program<\/strong>, applied after an on-campus visit from company representatives, and soon found herself on the EdgeVerve AI Next<\/strong> team. \u201cI\u2019m building out their employer branding strategy\u2014figuring out how to position them as the employer of choice for top AI talent, and how to keep current employees engaged,\u201d she explains. \u201cIt\u2019s been super interesting so far.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI\u2019m interacting with people from over 15 different countries. It\u2019s teaching me how to work across cultures and find common ground when everyone brings something unique to the table.\u201d<\/h3>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

What stands out most is the unexpected harmony of life in India: \u201cThe traffic is wild, but people are calm, welcoming, and peaceful. There\u2019s this beautiful balance.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Liam Velani: \u201cYou see innovation as part of everyday life\u201d<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Liam Velani<\/a>, a Master in Management<\/a> student of Indian and Sri Lankan heritage, grew up between London and southern Spain\u2014so adapting to global environments comes naturally. \u201cHaving attended the IE Summer School, I chose the MIM because of its international outlook and its focus on innovation and leadership,\u201d he says. \u201cI wanted to grow as a global leader in the digital and strategy space.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

With the help of IE\u2019s Talent & Careers Service<\/strong>, Liam applied for the Infosys internship through his advisor, Clara. Today, he\u2019s working on AI implementation within ERP programs<\/strong> for a global workforce client, and helping develop digital infrastructure strategy across multiple sectors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He describes Infosys as \u201cstructured, fast-paced, and innovation-driven.\u201d What\u2019s surprised him most is how agile teams operate within large organizations. \u201cThere\u2019s extensive agility within more hierarchical frameworks,\u201d he says. \u201cIt\u2019s about balancing long-term strategy with short-term implementation.\u201d For Liam, living in India has also been deeply personal. \u201cThe scale and ambition of its digital transformation is inspiring,\u201d he reflects. \u201cCoupled with a growing middle class and developing infrastructure, you see innovation as part of everyday life.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Emanuele Ghidoni: \u201cIt\u2019s like doing another kind of master\u2019s\u2014through real work\u201d<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

For Emanuele Ghidoni<\/a>, another Master in Management<\/a> student, the Infosys internship has been \u201cprofessionally enriching and personally eye-opening.\u201d His project\u2014focused on the North American market\u2014meant late-night calls and collaboration across time zones. \u201cEach intern was assigned their own strategic project,\u201d he says. \u201cIt was real work with real impact.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A highlight of his experience was a 24-hour AI Hackathon<\/strong>, where mixed business and STEM teams tackled live challenges from Infosys leadership. \u201cOur final challenge came directly from the founder, Narayana Murthy,\u201d Emanuele recalls. \u201cHe asked us, \u2018How can we attract and retain talent in India?\u2019 It was a real issue with no easy solution.\u201d His team reached the finals, presenting their LLM-powered dashboard solution and even joining Murthy for lunch afterward. \u201cHe told us, \u2018The problem of India is India itself.\u2019 It was shocking, but also very real.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt felt like a bubble\u2014clean, safe, everything you needed. On weekends, we traveled all over India.\u201d <\/h3>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

From hiking in the mountains to visiting Mumbai and Delhi, the experience has changed how he sees global opportunity. \u201cYou realize how lucky we are in Europe,\u201d he says. \u201cAnd you see what\u2019s possible when a country wants to grow.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Learning without borders<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

For Natalia, Liam and Emanuele, India has been more than a professional stepping stone\u2014it\u2019s a reminder that business today knows no boundaries. Each of them found their placement through IE University\u2019s Talent & Careers platform<\/strong>, showing how global connections translate into real-world outcomes long before graduation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As Natalia puts it, \u201cDon\u2019t overthink it\u2014just do it. There\u2019s so much to learn from being in a different culture.\u201d For Liam, the lesson is about vision: \u201cWorking in India had always been a faint idea for me, but aligning with my interests in digital infrastructure, it\u2019s already been deeply rewarding.\u201d And for Emanuele, the advice is simple: \u201cYes, I 100% recommend it. You open your eyes\u2014and see what\u2019s possible.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
