When we speak, Emma Luisa Gehl<\/a> is back in Frankfurt visiting family, between client work in Munich and workshops in Switzerland. Emma smiles at the mention of Madrid\u2014she\u2019d \u201clove to be there again\u201d\u2014because that\u2019s where her master\u2019s year at IE Business School left its mark. Eight months into her role at Simon-Kucher<\/a>, she\u2019s already cycled through private equity due diligences, a US platform pricing redesign, and an industrial pricing overhaul. The throughline: real responsibility, fast.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A graduate of the Master in Management<\/a>, Emma chose consulting over pure finance for a simple reason: \u201cIt\u2019s about people.\u201d The finance depth came anyway\u2014Bloomberg Terminal, investments and portfolio analysis, advanced Excel\u2014and now powers her work on the numbers behind strategy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What\u2019s it like working at Simon-Kucher?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

In her first eight months, Emma has worked with four clients across three practices. Two were private equity due diligences\u2014\u201cshort sprints of two to three weeks.\u201d Another was in Software, Internet & Media, where her team rebuilt a platform\u2019s pricing structure for a U.S. client. Right now she\u2019s in Technology & Industrials, restructuring prices and discounts for a manufacturer in Switzerland.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe approach depends,\u201d she says. PE follows a strict due diligence structure. Elsewhere, teams blend firm methodologies with partner frameworks and client context. Even as a junior, she\u2019s been trusted to present a sales training to 35 people. \u201cIt\u2019s great that you get real responsibility early. You grow fast.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pressure varies by industry. PE is intense\u2014\u201cYou have to be sharp and on point,\u201d says Emma. With industrial clients, on-site workshops and repeated touchpoints build trust quickly. \u201cThey want our help and appreciate it. That makes the collaboration easier.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How do you navigate different cultures on global projects?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Emma\u2019s US platform project put most of the team stateside. The communication styles were different from her German base, but consultants, she says, \u201care adaptable.\u201d The job is listening first, then flexing to the client\u2019s needs. \u201cYou learn by doing\u2014understand expectations, then adjust naturally.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

IE Business School was a live lab for that. Classrooms were highly diverse, and group work surfaced different expectations. \u201cSome classmates aimed for top grades. Others already had roles in family firms and focused on the experience.\u201d The result was an early lesson in cross-cultural teamwork.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As a group leader, Emma used 10-minute daily check-ins to align goals and keep work moving. \u201cCommunication and setting expectations are everything.\u201d That discipline paid off during a standout project\u2014extending Airbnb\u2019s business model and pitching to invited investors. \u201cWe all had different ideas, but we made it work.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How does the Master in Management help for a career in consulting?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Emma arrived with strong fundamentals\u2014accounting, reading a balance sheet, solid Excel\u2014but the finance specialization leveled her up. In Investments & Portfolio Analysis, the class worked hands-on in the Bloomberg Terminal, analyzing real portfolios with advanced techniques. \u201cIt was practical and immediately relevant.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She also took an advanced Excel course focused on complex formulas and analytical methods. \u201cThose skills are directly useful in consulting,\u201d she says. \u201cI use them every day.\u201d The mix of technical rigor and case-based teaching gave her both range and speed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The degree also shaped Emma’s starting point. At Simon-Kucher, Emma rejoined as a C2 (Consultant 2)\u2014the entry level for master\u2019s graduates\u2014instead of C1. Promotion from C1 to C2 typically takes about a year. \u201cThe master\u2019s made a difference\u2014both for client work and where you start.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Why work at Simon-Kucher?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

We say rejoined, because Emma first worked at Simon-Kucher as an intern, during a time when the firm wasn\u2019t hiring full-time. When recruitment reopened during Emma’s studies, she reapplied. \u201cI sent my application in summer, interviewed in October, and started in March.\u201d In between, she worked on projects with a student consultancy from her bachelor\u2019s university to stay sharp.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

During Emma’s time at IE Business School, she explored the wider consulting landscape. Firms like BCG<\/strong>, Bain<\/strong>, and Roland Berger<\/strong> visited campus, hosting presentations and networking sessions. \u201cIt was a great way to compare cultures and approaches,\u201d Emma says. \u201cThey all do similar work, but the environment feels completely different.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That contrast confirmed her choice. \u201cI felt comfortable at Simon-Kucher<\/a>,\u201d she says. \u201cThe partners are approachable, you can just grab a coffee with them. It\u2019s an open, supportive culture. Some other firms felt more hierarchical, but Simon-Kucher fits me better.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How can studying a master’s degree improve your outlook?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

During Emma’s bachelor\u2019s university, good grades were hard-won. During her master’s degree, she excelled. \u201cIt validated that I\u2019m good at what I do.\u201d IE\u2019s present-in-every-course culture turned that confidence into a habit. \u201cI just delivered a presentation to 35 people and felt calm,” says Emma. “That repetition I had at IE really helps.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Emma also built a network that continues to grow. \u201cI met my best friends at IE\u2014one\u2019s in Paris, others across South America\u2014and we\u2019re still in touch all the time.\u201d The personal side, she says, is inseparable from the professional one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And beyond skill or network, there\u2019s mindset. \u201cIE made me more open-minded and empathetic,\u201d Emma says. \u201cYou learn to understand how different people work\u2014and that helps everywhere, not just in consulting.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
