\u201cI\u2019ve always been curious,\u201d says French entrepreneur Tanguy Audouin<\/a>, founder and CEO of Glydz<\/a>. \u201cEven as a kid, I was inventing things. Once, I tried to make a pulley system from the laundry room to the third floor so my parents wouldn\u2019t have to carry wet clothes upstairs. It never worked – but I learned something.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That mix of imagination and persistence never left. By 17, Tanguy was already running a small phone-repair business from his home in Normandy, learning firsthand how to build trust with customers, manage orders, and turn frustration into opportunity. \u201cI broke my phone, fixed it, then fixed others. Suddenly it became a business.\u201d The work wasn\u2019t glamorous, but it taught him the principles of entrepreneurship.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Today, those lessons guide “Glydz”: a startup<\/a> born between Paris and Madrid with the goal of making mobility effortless. The product? Electric soles that fit on your shoes and let you glide through the city.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Let’s find out more about the journey from this Master in Management<\/a> graduate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What is Glydz, and how did it start?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

“I\u2019d been developing electric skateboards for ten years,\u201d Tanguy explains. \u201cThey were amazing to ride, but impossible to scale – too big, too heavy, too dangerous. I wanted to get closer to walking. What if movement could feel human again?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That question led to a decade-long experiment. Tanguy stripped mobility down to its essence – no frames, no handlebars, no clutter – just a motor, a battery, and balance. \u201cWe reduced mobility from a bunch of useless metal and batteries to only what\u2019s essential,\u201d he says. \u201cIt had to be something you could take anywhere, even on the metro.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The result is a sleek pair of electric soles<\/strong> that accelerate and brake intuitively.<\/h3>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

They can reach speeds up to 25 km\/h, yet fold neatly into a backpack when you\u2019re done. The product is manufactured in Madrid and tested in Paris, with Tanguy splitting his time between the two cities. \u201cThe goal was to make the smallest, smartest vehicle ever made,\u201d he says. \u201cSomething so intuitive it disappears.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How do you invent a product?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Building Glydz came from years of trial and error. \u201cThere\u2019s no magic,\u201d Tanguy says. \u201cYou draw, you imagine, you build. It doesn\u2019t work, you build again. Every version fails differently. And that\u2019s how you move forward.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tanguy created the first prototypes alone, 3D-printing parts and testing each design himself.<\/h3>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI\u2019m the head engineer and designer. Now we\u2019re partnered with factories, but I invented it all from scratch.\u201d The early versions were rough – a 3D-printed proof of concept with wide wheels. But each generation got lighter and more reliable. By version four, the system was fully functional. Version five, currently under patent review, is ready for launch.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The company is now six months away from releasing its first public model through a Kickstarter campaign. \u201cWe\u2019ve raised \u20ac65,000 and are aiming for \u20ac150,000,\u201d Tanguy explains. \u201cWe already have \u20ac80,000 available. It\u2019s a good start, but fundraising is never done. If this article reaches investors, we\u2019re ready to talk.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What does it take to start a real business from scratch?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYou have to build something that answers a real need,\u201d he says. \u201cThat\u2019s the hard part. I once stopped a guy on an e-scooter and asked him why he used it. He said it was the fastest way to work. Then I asked what he didn\u2019t like. He said it had been stolen seven times. That\u2019s when I knew, we needed something people could take with them.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That single insight shaped the company\u2019s philosophy: build what people do<\/em>, not what they say<\/em>. \u201cIf you ask someone, \u2018Would you use this?\u2019 they\u2019ll say yes to be polite,\u201d Tanguy says. \u201cBut that doesn\u2019t mean anything. Watch what they actually do, and design from there.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He believes excellence comes from that same kind of discipline. \u201cEntrepreneurship isn\u2019t about having ideas,\u201d he says. \u201cIt\u2019s about being stubborn enough to find out why they don\u2019t work – and keep building anyway.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Where does the drive to invent come from?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

\u201cTechiness came first,\u201d Tanguy laughs. \u201cI\u2019ve always liked understanding how things work. I like when something\u2019s broken, because it means there\u2019s something to learn.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

His parents played a key role. \u201cThey never stopped me from creating,\u201d he says. \u201cMy dad helped me when I started working on skateboards with high-amperage batteries. It\u2019s dangerous. You can burn yourself, or worse. He made sure I stayed safe.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe had one argument when I wanted to drop out of school to do it full-time. They told me to finish my studies. In hindsight, they were right. It gave me a stronger foundation.\u201d<\/h3>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

That foundation of technical curiosity, creative persistence, and the refusal to accept limits has become the backbone of his company. \u201cI don\u2019t see myself in any job that isn\u2019t my own,\u201d he admits. \u201cI want to build things that exist because I built them. That\u2019s how I define success.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What\u2019s the long-term vision for Glydz?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe goal is simple,\u201d Tanguy says. \u201cA pair of Glydz<\/a> in every backpack.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tanguy imagines a future where mobility is invisible – something you never think about, because it just works. \u201cYou leave home, throw your Glydz<\/a> in your bag, and forget about them. When you need to move, you glide. When you\u2019re done, you hop on a train or bus and pack them away. That\u2019s freedom.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

To get there, the company plans a 2026 launch targeting 1,000 units sold on day one. After that, Tanguy wants to shift toward a leasing model. \u201cBuying costs about \u20ac1,000 – it\u2019s a big barrier,\u201d he says. \u201cBut at \u20ac60 a month, it\u2019s accessible. Like a metro pass for your feet.\u201d The move reflects a larger shift in how people consume mobility: from ownership to access, from heavy to light, from conscious effort to effortless motion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How does Glydz fit into global innovation trends?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Tanguy is clear-eyed about trends. \u201cEveryone\u2019s fighting for their piece of the AI bubble,\u201d he says. \u201cBut 85 to 90 percent of those companies will disappear. They don\u2019t have use cases, and they don\u2019t make money.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mobility, he argues, is the opposite: it never stops being necessary. \u201cEven in an economic downturn, people have to move. When fuel gets expensive or climate goals tighten, there\u2019s a natural turn toward greener, lighter transport. That\u2019s where we fit.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Glydz needs no new infrastructure. You can ride on sidewalks, bike lanes, even take them on planes. \u201cWe\u2019re certified for flight travel,\u201d Tanguy adds. \u201cIt\u2019s plug-and-play for cities.\u201d<\/h3>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe\u2019re working on systems that make Glydz<\/a> safer and smarter. Imagine your soles detect a wall or uneven pavement and automatically adjust. That\u2019s AI that people would actually pay for.\u201d Beyond that, he sees battery innovation as the real frontier. \u201cOur engines are already at the physical limit. The next evolution will come from energy density – and when it does, we\u2019ll be there first.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How did the Master in Management help turn an idea into a company?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

When Tanguy arrived in Madrid, he already had a rough prototype but no clear path to scaling it. \u201cI chose IE because it\u2019s ranked the best in Europe for entrepreneurship,\u201d he says. \u201cI wanted to build Glydz<\/a> into something real.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Through Venture Lab, that transformation began. \u201cThe first Venture Day, I wasn\u2019t ready,\u201d he recalls. \u201cSix months later, I had a 3D-printed<\/a> model. By the third lab, I had a working metal prototype I could actually ride. That\u2019s how much you grow in one program.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The process gave him structure, accountability, and mentors who\u2019d built companies themselves.<\/h3>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

One professor in particular left a mark. \u201cHe taught AI and was phenomenal,\u201d Tanguy says. \u201cHe showed us tools like AI-generated music the day they came out. I learned low-code and no-code development from him. Now our accounting runs on an AI system I built using those same tools.\u201d The lesson was bigger than technology: it was about adaptation. \u201cAt IE, you\u2019re surrounded by people doing things. Launching startups, testing ideas, building prototypes. That energy pushes you forward.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What can aspiring founders learn from Tanguy\u2019s story?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

First, curiosity is capital. \u201cI didn\u2019t plan to be an entrepreneur,\u201d says Tanguy. \u201cI just wanted to understand how things work, and fix them when they didn\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Second, failure is research. Every version of Glydz<\/a> began as a problem that wasn\u2019t solved yet. \u201cYou build, it fails, you build again. That\u2019s how you get to excellence.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And third, vision needs courage. \u201cPeople told me our idea was physically impossible,\u201d he says. \u201cThree years later, we proved them wrong. The end goal is freedom. Freedom to move, freedom to create, freedom to live faster and lighter. That\u2019s what Glydz<\/a> is all about.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
