You can study the Master in Management & Strategy<\/a> at IE Business School<\/a> for a specific kind of ambition. To see what form that takes in our students, we sat down with two high performers to hear how the program has shaped their thinking and plans for the future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Read on for firsthand insights from Evangelina Bergler<\/a> from Germany and Vivian Bernet Jessica<\/a> from Switzerland.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Why did they choose the Master in Management & Strategy in the first place?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Evangelina came to IE Business School with a clear strategic logic. Having already secured a return offer from McKinsey, she saw the Master in Management & Strategy as a way to deepen the foundation she had already started building. “Within consulting, I have many different divisions or projects and topics that I can get into, but the base is always the same,” she explains. “That’s why I think that the management strategy master was the right decision to strengthen that base.” For her, IE’s project-based model and the pull of Madrid made the choice feel natural.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Vivian’s reasoning centered on who she would be learning with. A graduate of the University of St. Gallen, she had spent three years working full-time within the St. Gallen Symposium, a student-run nonprofit, before moving into investor relations at an alternative investments firm in Zurich. “I thought this could be a really interesting cohort of students,” she says, “because the program requires at least one year of working experience. That really attracted me.” The curriculum’s practical orientation sealed the decision.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Both students also pointed to Madrid itself as a genuine draw. The city, they agree, acts as an active part of the experience. It pushes you to be open in ways a traditional university setting rarely demands.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What has the academic experience actually looked like?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Evangelina highlights the shift that comes with the specialization phase. “At the beginning, you do a lot of the base level classes, which is super interesting, but very standard,” she says. “Right now, because we entered the specializations, I really enjoy the classes we’re having. The professors are very interesting.” She’s also looking ahead to the Global Immersion Month with real anticipation. For her, the program’s value keeps building rather than plateauing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For Vivian, the standout moment so far has been a course called Strategic Foresight, part of her strategy specialization. “It was super interesting because we got to learn how you can spot weak signals in your environment to adapt your strategic planning towards the future,” she explains. “It kind of opens up your picture. It was a course that challenged all our mental models in ways we used to think, like this very business school standardized way.” It’s the kind of course, she says, that doesn’t just teach you content. It changes the lens through which you see everything else.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Both students also speak enthusiastically about the simulation format, where every course is applied through projects for a fictional med-tech company called MIMS Inc. “Some professors take it really seriously,” says Vivian, “and sometimes it actually feels like you’re working for MIMS Inc.” Evangelina echoes this: “Basically every theory we do is already applied within practice. We learn everything from a practical point of view, and I think it’s super valuable.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How has the cohort shaped their experience?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Ask either student about the biggest positive surprise of the program, and the answer is the same: the people. “This is what I’ve been extremely positively surprised by,” says Evangelina. “After six months, we still hang out in a group often. It says a lot about the master itself, about the people it attracts and how it selects.” With 40 students representing 19 nationalities, the cohort is less a classroom and more a living case study in how differently people can approach the same problem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Vivian frames it in terms of the quality of conversation it produces. “Everybody in our class has work experience from one and a half to nearly five years, from very different and diverse industries. This just creates a very interesting environment,” she says. “You’re graded on participation and everybody kind of elbows to get participation. But I need to say it really positively surprised me how interesting and engaging the lessons become because everybody has real-life working experience.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The group work model is something both mention as unexpectedly valuable. Students cannot choose their own teams. “We’re not allowed to choose our groups,” says Vivian, “but I think that’s very beneficial. You cannot always be with the people you get along with well, and it really trains your collaboration skills and people skills. Even if in some moments it can be grueling, afterwards you can take a lot with you for your career.” Evangelina adds: “Everyone is super ambitious, and it’s not just academia. Everyone is training for a marathon, going for top internships, still super social, has their little side project. That’s super inspiring.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What have they gained beyond the classroom?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

For Evangelina, the most significant shift has been internal. “Coming here, it’s just the beginning of a chapter for me that is very different,” she reflects. “What the Master in Management & Strategy is helping me with, and what did transform me, is that it made me really sure of who I am. And I think that’s the baseline for tackling anything.” She has also invested beyond the program itself, taking on the role of student ambassador. She credits it with building project management and people management skills that will follow her into her career.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Vivian points to specific impact skills she hadn’t expected to gain so directly. “We had a public speaking course where our professor was a public speaking trainer, and I think it was super impactful for any level of speaking skills,” she says. “Everybody could take away something. You’re much more conscious now when doing presentations or speaking about certain things.” She also highlights the problem-solving and project management rotation as immediately applicable. These are tools she can already imagine deploying on her return to her former company in Switzerland.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Both students note that the program’s diversity has pushed them to rethink how they approach differences in perspective. “It’s not just that we all look different,” says Evangelina. “We have different conversations. We see it when we tackle any sort of challenges, how other people used to do it differently in their countries or just think about it differently.” That exposure, she argues, is something no amount of textbook reading can replicate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What does the “Next Best You” mean to them?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

IE’s defining idea is that the program should propel students toward the next, better version of themselves. It resonates differently with each student, but deeply with both. For Evangelina, it’s fundamentally personal. “For me it’s truly more about personal development than academic or professional development,” she says. “You probably never reach this next best you, and you’re also not supposed to. It’s a journey of just aiming for something higher. Since I do feel I’ve changed coming here, I think I’m getting closer to it.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Vivian describes it as a two-directional process. “One journey is inward: you have the time to go inside and think, what do I want, where do I want to go, what are the values I want to stand for. The other is outward: connecting with people in your class, getting feedback, being open to new ideas, being open to be challenged.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Vivian also reflects on the privilege of that space. “A master’s is, I always say, one last time in your life where you can only focus on yourself. You have the time to think. And I think if both directions are done properly, you’ll definitely come out as your next best you after IE.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What would they tell someone considering the Master in Management & Strategy?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Evangelina’s advice is direct: “Ask yourself what you want to do and where you want to be. If you want to be in a diverse environment, doing interesting real-life challenges and working on real problems, then this is probably the place for you. And if you want to be around people that drive you and inspire you, but that you also like, then IE really has a way of making it all so nice.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Vivian keeps it equally clear: “Do it. But you need to be aware that it’s a program that requires your presence and your engagement. If you’re not ready to give in 100% of your attention, then it’s not the program for you.” She adds that the program has a genuine way of prompting students to reconsider their direction. Not by imposing an answer, but by giving them the tools and the space to find their own.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Asked to sum up the Master in Management & Strategy in three words, Vivian lands on: exciting, fun, and challenging. Three words that, as it turns out, describe both the program and the kind of people it tends to attract.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
