Research at IE University is becoming increasingly connected to industry, entrepreneurship and real-world problem solving. At IE School of Science & Technology, students are not only studying emerging technologies. In some cases, they are actively helping develop them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For Francisco Suarez Pedraza, alum of the Master in Computer Science and Business Technology<\/a>, that journey started during his master\u2019s degree. \u201cI wrote them an email saying I was interested in research and that I also needed to complete an internship,\u201d he says. \u201cA few weeks later, they called me about a project. That eventually turned into a full-time offer.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Today, Francisco works across both research and technical operations at IE School of Science and Technology. In September, he will also begin the school\u2019s new PhD program. His story reflects a wider shift happening across the school, where research is becoming more connected to student experience, innovation and industry collaboration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How does research work at IE School of Science & Technology?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

One of the main drivers behind this model is IEX Labs. Francisco describes it as a structure that connects researchers with companies looking for technological solutions to complex problems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cCompanies come with a problem and say, \u2018We think there\u2019s a technological solution, but we don\u2019t have the personnel or expertise to develop it. Can you help us?\u2019\u201d he says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Instead of relying only on traditional academic grants, IEX Labs<\/a> allows researchers to work directly with industry partners on applied research projects. These collaborations can involve machine learning, climate risk analysis, blockchain applications and healthcare technology. For Francisco, one current project involves working with an Austrian insurance company to model how climate change could affect future insurance pricing and risk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The collaboration has also expanded beyond the research itself. This year, IE University will host the Climate Change Insurance Conference, bringing together academics, companies and investors working in the field. Francisco says this industry-facing approach is one of the biggest differences compared to more traditional research models.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe research isn\u2019t just staying inside academic journals,\u201d he says. \u201cIt\u2019s actually being deployed in the real world to solve real problems.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What kind of research is happening at IE University?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Research at IE University spans multiple disciplines and often combines technology, business and social impact. Many projects focus on practical applications rather than purely theoretical questions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Some current research areas include machine learning for socio-technical challenges, blockchain and sustainability, virtual reality applications in healthcare and climate risk in financial systems. Other projects explore decision-making in creative industries, entrepreneurial ecosystems shaped by social media and digital communities without centralized leadership structures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Some projects analyze large-scale operational systems using millions of data points. Others focus on consumer behavior, organizational change or emerging forms of digital governance. Across the different schools, the common thread is the attempt to connect technical research with real-world implementation and measurable impact.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Pulse<\/a>, IE University’s flagship research content hub, serves as a powerful testament to the institution\u2019s position as a global leader in scientific and technological research. From this strategic perspective, the platform showcases of IE University\u2019s pioneering faculty and researchers are actively shaping the future in areas including climate and energy, financial systems, health and medtech, and core technologies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How do students get involved in research?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Research is becoming an increasingly important part of the student experience at IE School of Science and Technology. From research internships to project-based collaborations, students have opportunities to explore topics beyond the curriculum, develop specialized expertise and engage with the ideas shaping the future of technology and business.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One of the main entry points is through IEX Labs, where students can work alongside researchers and industry partners on active applied research projects. These collaborations give students first-hand exposure to the research process, from problem definition and data analysis to testing solutions and presenting results, while allowing them to contribute to solutions that have practical applications beyond academia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Students can also engage in research through internships within research groups and by joining ongoing projects led by faculty members. One example is CyPhy Life, a research group within the Robotics & AI Lab that explores the intersection of artificial intelligence, automation, robotics and human-computer interaction. Students involved in these projects gain hands-on experience working alongside researchers and technology experts on challenges that bridge the digital and physical worlds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At the master’s level, students can choose to complete their Capstone Project through a dedicated Research Track. This option allows them to conduct an in-depth academic research project under the supervision of a full-time faculty researcher. It culminates in a formal academic paper supported by a comprehensive literature review and a clearly defined methodology. For students considering a future PhD, research career or highly analytical industry role, it offers the opportunity to develop advanced research skills while contributing original insights to their field.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Why is this model becoming more important?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Francisco believes the relationship between research and industry is changing quickly, particularly in fields connected to artificial intelligence and emerging technologies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWith the AI explosion, we see that many AI labs are essentially run like companies,\u201d he says. \u201cThere\u2019s a shift happening away from the traditional image of academia toward something much more connected to industry.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That shift is increasingly visible at IE University. Research projects are being developed alongside companies, startups and international organizations, giving students exposure not only to academic work, but also to the operational side of innovation and technology development.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For Francisco, that practical application is what makes the experience rewarding. \u201cMy work is materializing into conferences, collaborations and projects that companies are actively using across multiple countries,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
