Adam James Wilson-Barnes- Student Story Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.) | IE University

Adam James Wilson-Barnes

About me

I was born on a small island between England and France called Guernsey, but moved to southern Spain when I was two. Growing up in a British household in Marbella was an incredible experience because I was exposed to a diverse international environment early on. I left home for IE University in 2017 and since then have lived in both Segovia and Madrid. I believe that in order to be mentally healthy, you must also be physically healthy. So, in my free time, I enjoy playing rugby, going to the gym and exploring my city with my friends. I also consider myself a passionate thespian—watching plays and musicals is one of my favorite activities.

"IE University allowed me to explore my personal and professional passions."

Exploring personal and professional passions

Adam initially came to IE University to study the Bachelor in Philosophy, Politics, Law and Economics, but after his first year in the program he found himself completely enamored by law. Following a summer internship in a law firm in Madrid, Adam decided that he wanted to pursue law and switched to the Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.). This program allows him to simultaneously complete an English Legal Practice course in the UK in order to become an official solicitor in England.

After spending four years studying and interning in the legal field, Adam is still elated with his decision and excited to continue his journey towards becoming a lawyer. During his time at IE University, he has taken full advantage of every opportunity. Moving away from home for the first time, Adam’s first three years in Segovia served as the perfect step into his new-found independence. He was able to participate in exciting activities and meet the most diverse group of people, many of whom have since become some of his best friends. He maintains that he would not have encountered such diversity anywhere else.

Relocating to Madrid truly felt ideal for the next phase of his life. The city allowed him to develop into a fully independent person, even in the middle of a global pandemic. Adam participated in a variety of the different activities that IE University offers, but his favorite was playing for, and serving as the captain of, the IE Rugby team. Involved in the sport from a young age, the chance to play the game he loves with other like-minded classmates was an unforgettable experience for Adam.

IE University gave Adam the space to explore his passions in both his professional and personal life. Professionally speaking, he participated in IE University’s Legal Clinic, which offers legal advice and counselling to NGOs and startups. There he was able to further develop his legal knowledge in a more professional environment.

Away from law, meanwhile, as well as indulging his passion for rugby Adam had a leading role in two different theatrical productions with the IE Drama Club. He told us that there were so many extra-curricular options that it was impossible for him to do everything. He asserts there is something for everyone at IE University, regardless of whether it is personal or professional.

Currently, Adam is heading into his fourth internship, where he will spend six weeks in London working for Boies Schiller Flexner LLP, an international litigation firm. As for the future, he would like to use his international legal education to work for a firm that allows him to travel the world and experience all that life has to offer. He also strives to uphold the values and ideologies of the law and to seek justice in an unjust world.
