IE University Activities in Hay Festival Segovia

IE University repeated for the fifth year as major sponsor and academic partner in the Hay Festival Segovia, the international literature and ideas meeting which would bring together authors and artists from the five continents, from June 26^th to 27^th 2013. This edition will have prominent figures as Mario Vargas Llosa, José Caballero Bonald, Rosa Montero, Antonio Muñoz Molina, Lorenzo Silva, Wang Shu (2012 Pritzker Winner) and David Foenkinos.

IE University collaborates actively with the organization of eleven of the events of the Hay Festival Segovia. The University has turned totally to the festival in events related to architecture, literature and design.

The Aula Magna of IE University welcomed last Saturday the opening of the festival with a one-on-one conversation between the dutch writer Joris Luyendijk and the deputy director of El País, Vicente Jiménez. Luyendik is a famous blogger, author of The Joris Luyendijk Banking Blog in The Guardian. Both journalists talked about the challenges media are facing in a world on constant change. This act, presented by Santiago Íñiguez, president of IE University, was organized in collaboration with the Nederland Embassy on Spain, El País newspaper, Renfe and the Segovia city council, with the help of the Ritz Hotel.

Yesterday, Hay Festival opened to entrepreneurs. In the Refectorium Room, in IE University Campus, Wayra was talked about; the Telefonica Start Up International Acceleration organization. In quechua, its name means “wind” and it was instituted by the Telefonica Foundation in 2011 as an incubator for entrepreneurs. It was founded to boost projects with a wide base on telecommunications, giving technology, orientation and funds. The meeting will be driven by Gonzalo Martín Villa, Wayra CEO, who will dialogue with three entrepreneurs related to the Hay Festival project.

THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 26^TH

Chinese Architecture 2013: the 100 contemporary projects from China Palace

The Quintanar Palace, in Segovia, takes in the inaugural act of the “Palace of China – Architecture China 2013” exhibition, directed by artist Fang Zhenning, that comes for the first time to Spain after his success in the Bienale of Venice 2012. The visitors can learn about the best projects being done in the Asiatic country through Chinese architects as Wang Shu, winner of the Pritzker award 2012, Ma Yansong and Liu JIakun, and international ones as norman Foster, Jacques Herzog, Rem Koolhaas, Zaha Hadid and Steve Holl. The exhibition is co-organized and produced by the Popular Republic of China Embassy in Spain, China International Exhibition Agency of China Arts and Entertainment Group (CAEG), the Chinese Minister of Culture, the Cultural Centre of China in Madrid and IE University. Also, Junta de Castilla y León collaborates offering the Palacio Quintanar. The exhibition can be seen from September 26^th to November 30^th 2013.

Writing Workshop with Fflur Dafydd

The welsh writer Fflur Dafydd offers a practical workshop of creative writing on Friday 27^th, at 12h00 in IE University. Dafydd will explore the different ways of creating characters, situations and scenario. Best-sellers World

ABC, with the collaboration of IE University, will organize a round table called “Forbidden to bore” moderated by journalists Jesús García Calero and Inés Martín Rodrigo, with the attendance of Lorenzo Silva, Javier Sierra, Juan Gómez Jurado and Julia Navarro, that will talk about the best-seller mill and how it is possible to catch the reader’s attention in an information saturated society. The table, beginning at 12h30 in the Capitular Room on campus, will be retransmitted on streaming in the cultural page of ABC.es, with the direct production of IE University Medialab.

China: culture, architecture and design

Friday, September 27^th, from 17h00 to 21h30, IE University Campus will have over different conversations with the culture, architecture and design from China as subject.

Building bridges between cultures

17h00, the conversation between Zhang Yu, president of the multidisciplinary CAEG and Santiago Íñiguez, IE University president and IE Business School Dean, will begin. The debate, moderated by international patron of Prado museum Juan Cambiaso, will approach Chinese irruption on the international artistic market.

Challenges of architecture and design

The challenges of architecture and design in a global world will be the center of the next debate in IE University, between 18h00 and 18h50. Lu Wnyu, architect and co-founder with Wang Shu of Amateur Architecture studio and Jose María de Churtichaga, architect and vice dean of IE School of Architecture & Design, will talk with Noelia Sastre, culture and lifestyle editor of Grazia magazine.

New Chinese architecture

From 19h00 to 19h50 a chat between Fang Zhenning, architect, international artist and China’s Pavillion on the Biennale Venezia 2012 curator, and Javier Quintana, architect and dean of IE School of Architecture & Design will take place. Both will talk about the exhibition in Segovia and contemporary Chinese architecture.

Conversation with Pritzker of Architecture award winner Wang Shu

IE University Aula Magna host the conversation between Chinese architect and Pritzker winner Wang Su with the executive director of Pritzker Award and vice dean for External Relations on IE School of Architecture and Design Martha Thorne. The central idea is the reconciliation of past and future in new Chinese architecture.

The event in the Santa Cruz la Real campus is co-organized with the Popular Republic of China Embassy, the Ministry of Culture, the Cultural Centre of China in Madrid, the CAEG (China Arts and Entertainment Group) and IE University; and the collaboration of Grazia magazine and the USA Embassy on Spain.

SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 29^TH

Blue Shield, the cultural patrimony’s Red Cross

Caja Segovia Auditorium will host on Sunday, September 29^th, at 13h30, a conversation between archduke Charles of Habsburgo-Lorena and the deputy director of ABC Ramón Pérez-Maura, about “Blue Shield, the cultural patrimony’s Red Cross”. The event is co-organized with ABC and has the collaboration of IE University. Blue Shield is the organization ensuring the safeguarding of important archeological sites on Libya, Afghanistan and other war torn countries. The archduke Charles of Habsburgo is its international committee president.
