Today, five hundred and fifty new students start their undergraduate course at the IE University being a reference center for further studies for international students. With respect to last year the number of new students has increased by a 30 % and keeps growing each year. Students from sixty different nationalities have begun their academic journey today; 76 % European and 24 % come from other parts of the world. As a whole, IE University opens this year with a total of one thousand five hundred and ninety students from everywhere. Today, IE University offers degrees in Business, Arquitecture, Communication, Law, Psychology and International Relations, combined degrees like Business with law or Business with International Relations.

Salvador Carmona, Rector of IE University at the opening ceremony underlined the position that IE University has in the international rankings. He also described the five main characteristics that define this university and that the accreditation agencies value ; how international the degrees are, the use of technology, the level of entrepreneurial thinking, cultural and human values and the combination of studies with a guaranteed intership.Carmona used Albert Einstein quote “Learn from yesterday, live for today, hope for tomorrow. The important thing is to not stop questioning”

The Village Defense, Soledad Becerril highlighted in her discourse at the ceremony that the XXIst century is defined by the era of permanent learning. She insisted that knowledge is the only thing that will help us defend ourselves against totalitarian and oppressive regimes. It’s the only way to express ourselves and rise a voice against violation or speak up when we see the political conflicts and massacres that are take place around us.

She also affirmed that the democratic system makes progress possible is because it recognizes the fundamental and liberty rights, power is reversible, it’s compulsory to follow the law, it guarantees stability and it allows modifications. According to Soledad Becerril, democracy is not perfect but it’s the only susceptible mean that can be mended.

On this note, she appealed to the youth from democratic countries because they are the ones who have to defend the democratic system and fight for peace.

To the student who start today their university degree, Becerril advised them that no matter in which field they are, they must keep in mind to be outstanding. She goes on by saying that more higher the studies comes with more responsibility and with a higher expectations of following acting in accordance to the law. It’s the law that protects us, helps us live safely, away from biasedness and abuse and it is what allows equality.
