IE School of Architecture and Design has organized a series of workshops focused on the need to integrate knowledge and disciplines in architectural practices and education. Participants in the workshops, which will be held at IE’s Madrid and Segovia centers, will include French architect and historian Jean-Louis Cohen, Portuguese architects Inés Lobo and Miguel Judas, Swedish studio Tham & Videgård Arkitekter, and Irish studio Grafton Architects.

This week IE School of Architecture and Design will be welcoming renowned architects and professors of architecture to a series of workshops and two lectures. The events will all be open to the public and will be held at IE’s Segovia and Madrid centers.

On Monday, January 12, at 1pm, French architect and historian Jean-Louis Cohen, director of the Sheldon H. Solow Chair for the History of Architecture at New York University’s Institute of Fine Arts,  will give a lecture at IE’s Santa Cruz la Real campus in Segovia entitled “Architecture in Uniform,” in which he will examine in detail the contributions of architecture and design within the context of the Second World War, and how designers and architects were at the front line during the war and the reconstruction of peace.

Cohen has curated major international exhibitions and is an expert in the contemporary history of architecture. From 1997 to 2003, he served as France’s Minister for culture to create the Cité de l'Architecture, a research center and museum located in the Palais de Chaillot in Paris, which opened in 2007. Dr. Cohen is an elected member of the Academy of Arts in Berlin, the Russian Academy of Architecture and the Accademia di San Luca in Rome. His research is centered on architecture and urban design of 20th century Russian avant-garde, the history of Paris, and the work of a range of architects who include Le Corbusier and Mies van der Rohe.

On Wednesday, January 14, at 7.30pm, Portuguese architects Inés Lobo and Miguel Judas, together with Tham & Videgård Arkitekter and Grafton Architects, will take part in a round table focused on integration in the field of architecture, moderated by David Goodman, Director IE University’s Bachelor Degree in Architecture. This event will be held in IE’s Paper Pavilion, designed by Pritzker Prizewinner 2014 Shigeru Ban and located at IE’s Madrid center.

“Nowadays the architect is engaged in work that goes beyond the design of the individual building,” explained David Goodman. “Architects deal with work on many scales, from the city, to the territory, to the small scale of the architectural detail. In order to prepare architects to work on so many scales and in so many different areas of the discipline, we believe it is important to be able to integrate a range of different kinds of architectural knowledge. It is for this reason that we have invited a team of internationally renowned architects to share what they consider to be the essence of their form of architectural practice.”
