Solomont was awarded the distinction at IE’s Venture Day 2013 event, where 500 international entrepreneurs and investors met to examine the challenges involved in creating new businesses

US Ambassador to Spain Alan D. Solomont was today named Distinguished Visiting Professor by IE University. Solomont was awarded the academic distinction while participating in IE’s Venture Day 2013 event, which served as a platform for over 500 international entrepreneurs, business leaders and investors to examine the challenges involved in launching a new business. The title was presented to Solomont by Diego del Alcázar, President of IE, Salvador Carmona, Rector of IE University, and Juan José Güemes, President of IE’s International Center for Entrepreneurial Management.

“It is a great honor, and one which evidences the way the US tradition of entrepreneurship influences the way the next generation of business leaders, many of whom will come from IE, see the world,” said Salamont. Salvador Carmona stated that IE was delighted to welcome Ambassador Alan D. Solomont as a member of its faculty. “His experience as an entrepreneur and his constant support of entrepreneurial endeavor mean that he embodies the values that IE instills in its students.”

Venture Day 2013 was held today at the headquarters of the Rafael del Pino Foundation in Madrid.  The event also served to showcase the ten best business projects developed this year by students of IE Business School and IE University, who presented their initiatives to a panel of international investors. Additionally, it featured the participation of experts like Uri Levine, President of Waze.com, a free mobile application that enables the automatic update of maps and sharing of information on the traffic situation in real time. Levine gave a talk on “The Power of the Crowd”.

Bedy Yang, venture partner of 500 Startups, one of Silicon Valley’s best known seed capital funds, took part in a round table on “The Pros and Cons of Business Accelerators and Incubators”. Bernhard Niesner, CEO of Busuu.com, a virtual community for learning languages, examined “Strategies for Capturing New Users”, and Manuel Valle Muñoz, President of ENISA, an innovation company run by Spain’s Ministry for Industry, Tourism and Trade, explored public policy challenges involved in funding business projects.
