Bachelor in Applied Mathematics | IE University

FIRST YEAR

In Year 1, you will study basic core subjects that lay the solid foundations of theoretical and practical mathematical knowledge. In the first semester, you will study calculus, linear algebra, discrete mathematics and geometry. These subjects will enable you to understand the language and methods of mathematics and to develop your capacity for abstract thinking. These subjects will be complemented with an introductory programming course in the first and second semesters, along with probability and statistics, data visualization and databases in the second semester. Additionally, you will also choose a humanities course, closely aligned with IE University’s values and geared to widen your perspective.

SECOND YEAR

In Year 2, you will delve deeper into key mathematical concepts. You will study ordinary differential equations, numerical computation methods, numerical linear algebra, machine learning and various statistical models and optimization techniques. These subjects will be complemented with transversal skills—entrepreneurship, technology and communication—preparing you for the professional world.

THIRD YEAR

After the first two years, you will be equipped with a solid foundation in mathematical tools and concepts. In Year 3, you will tackle more complex and advanced concepts: partial differential equations, algorithms, optimization, nonlinear dynamics, Bayesian statistics and stochastic processes, deep learning and mathematical modeling. These courses will show you how to apply mathematics to other disciplines—just like you will be expected to do in your future position—and to the first semester’s IE Challenge, where you will be conducting consultancy for companies to improve their sustainable development goals alongside fellow classmates. In the second semester, you will choose two electives and, if you wish, what concentration you would like to pursue: Industrial Mathematics, Artificial Intelligence or Financial Mathematics.

FOURTH YEAR

Year 4 focuses on the concentrations. You will choose from a wide selection of electives to tailor your training to your personal career goals. You can complete your degree with a concentration, either in Industrial Mathematics, Artificial Intelligence or Financial Mathematics, or create your own unique and customized path by combining courses from different concentrations. A considerable amount of time will be devoted to working on your capstone project, which you will present in the second semester. This final year will also offer you the opportunity to participate in an exchange program to study in any one of our prestigious partner institutions in over 50 countries.

BACHELOR IN APPLIED MATHEMATICS Concentration

One of the characteristics that make the Bachelor in Applied Mathematics unique is the three concentrations available. At IE University, we believe in providing students the option to build and customize their study plans. You will be able to choose from three concentrations: Industrial Mathematics, Artificial Intelligence and Financial Mathematics.
