Bachelor of Laws - First year - Study Plan

FIRST YEAR

Get ready to discover law without borders! Your first year is focused on getting familiar with the type of law that transcends the limits of one judicial system. From day one, you’ll start to get an inside look into the day to day of a global legal professional. You’ll develop an awareness of the legal market, build your knowledge of various legal systems, and gain hands-on, real-world experience. The program’s Comparative Law methodology, designed to prepare you for legal work in settings where multiple legal systems are at play, will give you an excellent foundation in the principles of Private, Civil and Criminal Law. Finally, you’ll gain a thorough understanding of the legislation that governs states, international organizations and other global institutions.

SECOND YEAR

Build on those foundations in year two, developing the skills needed to understand and apply the main principles of Civil Procedure. You will also acquire the analytical, interpersonal and leadership skills required of all legal professionals in today’s world. Throughout this academic year, you will tap into your entrepreneurial side while also exploring the importance and impact of technology in the field of law. Finally, you’ll be introduced to Administrative, Employment and Property Law, with special emphasis placed on Private International Law. By the end of the year, you will also have an in-depth appreciation of the most pressing legal issues facing global corporations through an understanding of Commercial Law.

Bachelor of Laws - Third year - Study Plan

THIRD YEAR

As you progress to year three, you will begin to refine your critical-thinking skills and gain an even deeper knowledge of law through advanced courses and renowned international competitions. You will work with the most significant aspects of litigation procedures in Civil, Labor and Criminal Law disputes while touching on fundamental legal concerns such as civil disobedience and the concept of justice. Increased focus will be given to management skills that are required to successfully run a law firm, as well as Taxation, Accounting and Finance. You will also have the chance to do an internship or mentorship this year at a leading law firm such as PwC, Latham & Watkins, and Pérez-Llorca.

This year also has an interdisciplinary component, as you will have the opportunity to learn more about areas outside of the realm of law through elective offerings. Additionally, you can take the track “Concentración en Derecho Español” to gain a deeper understanding of Spanish Law.

Bachelor of Laws - Fourth year - Study Plan

FOURTH YEAR

This is undoubtedly your most exciting year yet! If you decide to practice law in Spain, you will choose between interning at a prestigious law firm or undertaking an exchange program at one of our respected partner institutions around the world. You’ll also be able to personalize your studies by taking electives from a range of options including Competition Law, Legal Tech and Environmental Law. This year, there’s no shortage of opportunities to develop your legal skills and enhance your profile, with global competitions and challenges such as Moot Court competitions, the Comparative Law in Action Challenge or LawWithoutWalls. And after your fourth year, if you so wish, you can complete an LL.M. and a specialization at IE Law School.

If you have chosen the Dual LL.B. Bachelor of Laws + LL.M at King’s College London, you will spend your first three years at IE University and your fourth year at the world-renowned King’s College London in the UK. By the end of this program, you will have the knowledge, skills and experience necessary to practice law in different jurisdictions in both the private and public law sectors.

If you choose to take your Bachelor of Laws to the next level with an LL.M (four years) or a JD (five years) from Northwestern University, you will study in the United States starting your fourth year. You will graduate with an exceptional understanding of Civil and Common Law, as well as the intricacies of the US legal system.

Finally, if you have decided to embark on the five-year IE University–ITAM Dual LL.B program, you will spend your first three years at IE University and the remaining two at ITAM in Mexico. Graduates from this program will be trained to practice law at an international level, thanks to the Comparative Law Methodology and comprehensive study of the Mexican legal system.

COMPARATIVE LAW METHODOLOGY AT IE UNIVERSITY

As today’s economies and societies become increasingly globalized, so do legal services and education. This is why we teach comparative law—to provide an entirely global approach to legal training. We apply comparative law as a methodology, followed in all our undergraduate programs across all legal disciplines, training our students to acquire a global legal mindset. Through this methodology, we compare similarities and differences across various legal systems, and offer comprehensive training by comparing civil law and common law jurisdictions.

From beginning to end, our comparative law programs prepare our students to think and act as international legal professionals, giving them a thorough understanding of legal concepts, systems, and institutions. In addition to this emphasis on comparative law, our programs feature a practice-oriented approach, helping students to deepen their understanding of legal institutions and solve problems by focusing on international legal practice. We aim to produce graduates who truly understand legal institutions from a conceptual perspective, allowing them to master the practice of international law.
