Immersing in Data Science | by Merve Basoz Florido-Banqueri

I’m currently studying the Data Science Bootcamp at IE University. After graduating from my Bachelor in Chemical and Biological Engineering in Turkey and working in Dubai for five years, I decided that I wanted to broaden my skills and expand my horizons.

The Data Science Bootcamp in Madrid fulfilled both desires and was the perfect choice for me. Learning about a relatively new and innovative field like data science forces me to leave my comfort zone while also allowing me to explore a beautiful city. Despite the challenges faced due to COVID-19, my program experience has been great. The classes are enjoyable and make it easy to integrate into the IE University community.

IE University’s Liquid Learning model allows us to feel constantly connected to our professors and classmates. Classes are interactive and student participation is expected and encouraged.

Although the program is academically rigorous and demanding, its benefits become apparent almost instantly. With every conversation, debate and discussion with my colleagues and professors, I feel closer to achieving my professional goals.

The practical learning experience culminates in the Capstone Project, where we work with real data sets extracted from real companies. This allows us to apply the theory we learn in class to real-life situations that we can expect to find when we join the industry. Working on our Capstone Projects every day allows us to gain practical experience while still studying the program.

What’s more, we’re immersed in the professional world throughout the program by the industry visits. Industry experts speak to us about their roles and the application of data science to commercial challenges and opportunities, helping us recognize the various business aspects of data science.

I’m really grateful to IE University for giving me the opportunity to shape my future and providing me with the necessary tools to achieve my goals in such a short period of time. I’m really looking forward to the next few weeks, keeping up with the relentless learning pace and taking the necessary steps to get closer to my goals.
