Peer Timmers is a microbiologist specializing in water treatment. During his PhD at Wageningen University and postdoc at Wetsus, he researched how microorganisms can degrade pollutants or recover resources from wastewater—ideally both. At KWR Water Research, he focused on microbiological, biotechnological, and nature-based approaches to drinking water treatment, aiming for climate-resilient solutions. His interdisciplinary work involved collaboration with technologists, chemists, hydrologists, and data scientists, as well as direct partnerships with waterboards, municipalities, and wastewater companies. He also coordinated a joint research program on managed aquifer recharge. With a strong focus on applied science, Peer has published Q1 papers, professional articles, and over 30 scientific reports. He advocates for a paradigm shift in sustainable water treatment that recognizes the potential of microbiology.
